Former COY Rick Carlisle is a much better X's and O's NBA head coach than Mo Cheeks.... Mo does a superior job of relating to his players. This is why he's done such a stellar job this season.
But if the Sixers want to graduate to that upper echelon of teams, they will need a coach who excels at both facets.
If Dallas signs Carlisle, they will become a better team. Unlike Mo, Carlisle is a great in-game coach who can draw up the right play and get good shots like clockwork. Whoever has watched this series closely will notice Mo has literally come out of timeouts in need of buckets and simply ran isolation one-on-one plays for Iggy.
Iggy has looked atrocious in this series, but Mo hasn't exactly put him in the best situations. He simply never runs anything creative, like one damn play for Thad, and his X's and O's are just weak. His rotation is beyond mind-boggling. He's a remarkable motivator. He's just not a great all-around coach.
It would be interesting to see what another former COY, Mike D'Antonio could do with this high-flying, open-court team. I've always thought the Van Gundys are incredibly underrated coaches, too.

its tough bc this team severely lacks shooters...in phx during their prime years, almost anyone of their guys could hit 3s or deep jumpers (see Kurt Thomas, James Jones, Raja Bell, Banks, Quentin Richardson, Joe Johnson)
we however lack that skill and rely on getting to the rim or getting fouled in the halfcourt set...its a huge hinderence for what Mo can do and its something that needs to be addressed right up there w the pf position

Yeah, but they said Ed is talking about extending it for a couple more years beyond the one they already gave him.
Hoo-boy, talk about jumping the gun. If you've already given him one more year, then why not wait till the year is up, see how he does, then determine whether he deserves more. Unbelievable.

Our management has a knack for giving people long contract extensions that they don't deserve. It's depressing really.

Not sure what this means for Dallas in terms of their current style of play. Carlisle does preach more of a defense-first, walk it up style of play. I would think there will be more changes in Dallas this offseason than the coach. I would imagine that Josh Howard won't be back.
Two years from being two years away.

Silly boy ...
I know it is difficult to accept that the decision makers make decisions on what they observe and know about a coach instead of what you think you know. Instead of assuming Ed Stefanski is making a mistake ... you may wish to consider that maybe you are. Is that possible ?

Mo did a commendable job with the Sixers this year and earned his extension.
But D'Antoni is an open-court genius and an olympic-caliber coach. Moving forward, there's no doubt IMO the Sixers would be a superior team with D'Antoni than Mo Cheeks. Mo could've remained an assistant.
D'Antoni would've brought instant credibility to this franchise.
Mo's contract would've naturally expired, and we could've re-signed him this summer. It's a shame we can't even consider the option of D'Antoni at this time. Could've been a potentially dynamic fit with these young athletes. Oh well.

It's a solid move keeping Cheeks another one or two seasons. If the front offfice can show some modicum of stability, that will do wonders towards attracting the kinds of players that will want to play here.
That being said, Mo does need some bench help, and having more skilled assistants wouldt only help the Sixers and he do better. For them to go into this offseason with an unresolved coaching situation would have made it harder to attract free agents. Having that set, players know what to expect, and also know because it is one more year that anything can happen as well.

I couldn't agree more.
Ed succumbed to the pressure of the Philly hoops family that is so loyal to Mo Cheeks. Make no mistake, Mo has serious clout in the Philly hoops community. He's got people who go to bat for him. We all saw Sonny Hill sitting next to Stefanski during the DET series. I was ecstatic to see that... It was refreshing and it just looked right to me.
But it wouldn't surprise me if Sonny other other people put pressure on Ed to reward Mo for his efforts mid-season. At the time, I understood the move. Didn't necessarily agree with it... But I respected the idea of showing some loyalty within the organization and sending the message to the players that Eddie is committed to developing a core identity based on this years' accomplishments.
However, it would've been most prudent to let the contract run it's course before making any moves. Is there anyone out there who wouldn't be excited about the prospect of bring D'Antoni here with this mix of athletic fast-breakers? Especially when we watched Mo come out of timeouts with isolation plays for Iggy and Lou a la the Iverson era?
Now it's entirely possible that D'Antoni would've wanted more freedom with player personnel than Stefanski was willing to give... But if you look at this year's crop of free agent coaches: Avery, D'Antoni, Carlisle, JVG, Mark Jackson... there's some interesting names. Don't forget the idea of plucking Jay Wright, either.
