Question from a Toronto fan

Post#1 » by cram » Mon May 5, 2008 5:05 pm

Was really cheering for you guys to knock off the celtics, and am (now) a big fan of your team.

Question - why does Marvin start ahead of Childress? To me childress looks to be a far more effective player. Am i missing something?

1. Becuase Marvin was handed the starting job after we traded Harrington....Woody doesn't really change the starting lineups besides injury(although he did attempt to start Blo Wright for some odd reason last year).

2. For some reason Chil just comes off the bench. It doesn't matter if Royal Ivey/Mario West/Shelden/Cedric Bozeman have to start. Woody just likes to use him off the bench.

Thanks. Is it the general consensus that Childress (right now) is the better player?

Williams is a better shooter, but Childress is superior in all other ways. As for being the 6th man, in addition to the reasons already given Childress has more position flexibility. He can play the 1-3 spots (maybe even 4 if absolutely necessary). Marvin is a 3-4 who might be able to play a little 2 guard depending on the matchup.

Marvin has room to improve, but I think Chillz has hit his ceiling as a solid role player.

IIRC Childress actually prefers coming off of the bench. Williams also starts because when Childress is in it encourages Smith to stay on the perimeter (since Chil goes inside).

I'm also a Toronto fan I am also a resident here in Toronto lol.
I give the Hawks soo much respect because of the celtics series!
Im sure Atlanta fans will be pleased by next season. and Im sure if Atlanta continues to play like they did vs the Celtics they could possibly be in the top 5 seed's in the east.

Good Luck Hawks!

Marvin spreads the floor better and is a superior defender. I wish he had Chill's aggressiveness and body control.

This seems to be going beyond curiosity, are you scouting to determine which player to make a run at?

Childress is very good at moving w/o the ball, getting offensive rebounds, and finishing at the rim. His weaknesses are that he needs all day to get his shot off and that almost none of his offense comes off the dribble. He is also a below average defender.

Marvin is a much better shooter(although he doesn't shoot 3s)and he has the physical tools to become a very good man defender. His biggest weakness is definitely his awful footwork and he basically loses his balance just about every time he attempts to go to the basket. This may end up in a foul or he may turn the ball over but it's just not pretty.

Wow....you nailed it. I'm positioning to make a trade.

Anyway, no -- genuinely just curious. Doesn't make sense to me at all. (chill looks like a great player)

Chidress is athletic enough to make the occasional good play on defense, but fundamentally he's brutal. I wish there was a stat that showed who left the most players open from 3 this season. He'd be leading the league no doubt.
