Better Defender - MAYO or BAYLESS?

Tough to say. Each of them exhibited nice defensive tools (lateral quickness, basketball IQ, etc.) but I can't recall either one using them once.

Unfortunately, this goes back to an argument we've had ad nauseum on this board as to whether or not Bayless or Mayo are PGs. I think Mayo projects as a PG while Bayless projects as a SG, so I go with Mayo by default, but this debate isn't as clear-cut as it seems.

Mayo is a smart, pesky defender. I think he'll take his share of risks and be caught in the wrong position quite a bit early on, but he'll also nab quite a few steals with his superior hands and off the ball help D. He's not a lock-down type defender in the mold of Westbrook, but he isn't bad either. He gives effort.

I haven't watched enough of Bayless to know what kind of defender he is.

Assuming I am reading all this right.....I agree with PNF in that Mayo is the superior defender, especially when translating to the NBA

It's Mayo and it's not close. He is going to be a lockdown defender when he gets to the nba.

Give me OJ Mayo, on this debate, because I believe that with Mayo being built a bit tougher than Bayless it gives him the slight edge, and

I was pretty sure that Mayo was going to be a combo type guard, and Bayless was going to be more like a Point Guard type of a player.

Mayo, not even close. He typically guarded the best G on teams and played on an exceptional defensive team. Arizona on the other hand seemed to "hide" Bayless on the defensive end and it didn't even matter to them.

By the way, Mayo is a 2 and Bayless is a 1, while both have combo skills they are better suited to be full time at their position.

Bayless' best attributes all circle around his ability to score; I saw nothing of his ability as a passer or a defender to be an NBA PG. To me, he is strictly a 2-guard like Eric Gordon. Mayo, OTOH, has the makings of an excellent drive-and-dish game, the basketball IQ to play the point, and the athletic tools to defend against the best PGs.
