O.J. Mayo question

Post#1 » by Dexmor » Mon May 5, 2008 9:47 pm

Why is it he is projected 5th or so? Draft boards say he will have a individual career like Jordan/Kobe although he is not quite as athletic or as big as them so he probably won't be quite as good.
Now if he is sopposed to be that good or has a chance to be like that why is he not projected top 2 or at least 3? I understand Rose because Rose could be the best pg in 2 years and is pretty can't miss, has the scoring to take over a game and the passing. Beasley I personally don't understand but I see how others think that with him being a big man but he isn't a big man Center or even a real pf. He is a natural sf and projected as such. Even if you take out those 2 guys out of the equation why is he not projected next?

Also nbadraft.net which I think is an incrdible draft site which I respect there comparison is Ben Gorden and it was Gorden/Marbury. He is not an undersized pg who doesn't like passing or can't in Gorden's case because he is 6'4 or so 6'3 at the shortest which would mean he would be listed at 6'5 once he is drafted. That is plenty tall to play sg. If he were to play pg he would be more like Gilbert Arenas if anything although I think he is better then Gil.

I just don't see why he is projected after Lopez,Bayless and sometimes even Gorden.
Also since he is not to short to play sg what is all the negitive about not being able to play pg and shooting to much. To me he is a sg who can play pg who might be a little selfish but he is so young that could be worked on.

He is athletic, can shoot, can pass, can play 2 positions so why he is projected so low?
Isn't this clearly going to be a slip/steal like the Bogut year when Paul and Williams slipped bigtime?

Please help all info will be appreciated.

No seriously. Why would anybody pick a number of players over Mayo if Mayo is sopposed to be that good?

Same reason most people have Love ahead of Arthur, and that is utter foolishness

Mayo is a poor man's Kobe. He has a lot of skills, but he is undersized and can be selfish with the ball. He is a good player and should be a nice scorer, but he should not be ahead of Rose or Beasley, and I would rate him pretty evenly with Brook Lopez. I rate Mayo 4th, because tie goes to the 7 footer.

A poor mans Kobe is Wade. He should be projected higher. And given it to the 7 footer for size works 1 out of 100x. Besides maybe Bynum and Ming and can't think of many times where it's worked (besides the times where the 7 footer was clearly better). That is how Bogut's get picked over Paul just like I talked about earier.

The key question there is projected by whom???? other people on the internet??? he may very well not be slipping at all on the boards of those that truly matter, NBA teams

Ok. Then a very poor man's version of Kobe.

When considering position, fit, and potential, it's pretty clear to me who the top 2 are, who's number 3, and then who's number 4. At number 5 is where it gets jumbled and depends on who's drafting.

1/2. Rose/Beasley
3. Mayo
4. Lopez
5. ???

If you feel like takin a risk and project McGee reaching anywhere close to his ceiling than you would have to possibly place him at 4 if not a lock for #5

No way is he a Kobe or Wade. Wth? Not even close AT ALL.

He's more of a Joe johnson/Brandon Roy/ Jason Terry type of scorer, someone who relies on the outside jumper.
If lee is worth #12 then Ron is EASILY worth #5. Sooo...how about:
Malik Rose/#5 for Ron Artest.

1/2 Rose Beasley
3 Mayo

There is no GM that is gonna pass on Mayo for anyone not named Rose and Beasley. I just don't see it.

Personally I have it:

1. Mayo
2. Rose
3. Beasley

and from there it's a long ways down to the next talent level.

The spacing and quality teammates in the NBA are going to help Mayo look so much better in than he did in college. Rose is going to find out quickly that not having a jumper is going to hurt him in the NBA. Beasley is too much of a risk when it comes to his mental state.

I have Mayo going 3rd: http://www5.realgm.com/boards/viewtopic ... 26&start=0

I can actually see him going ahead of Rose and Beasley though.

If you actually believe Mayo will be better in the NBA than both Rose and Beasley, then you certainly have the right user name.

I wouldn't be so harsh, cammo101. The NBA game is a lot different to college. When Mayo and Rose went head to head this past season, it's not like Rose dominated him; it was about equal if memory serves me right.

I love all three players. I'd probably put Mayo 3rd, but it's not that far fetched to think that Mayo might actually be better than Rose and Beasley in the pros.

I was joking with him. What guys do head to head doesn't much matter. Beasley and Rose are on another level, and one game where they played simularaly to Meyo sure does not change that.

Mayo doesn't get to the line very much, and that makes me question his "superstar" potential. Elite scorers need to the free throw line. I like his overall game but there's no way I consider him over Rose or Beasley.
