O Happy Day! (BK steps down)

Post#1 » by lethalweapon3 » Wed May 7, 2008 1:23 pm

BK's leaving while the getting's good! Good move, both for him and the Hawks! Jump before you're pushed! Although I don't doubt he's been nudged a little bit.

EVerybody will remember the CP3/Deron non-pick, but on the good side I'll always remember him for the non-Handshake.

So who's out there as a GM candidate? Whoever comes in can make the call on whether to hang on to Woody as far as I'm concerned, but if the owners go that route they should hire quickly so we don't lose out on many more coaching candidates.

If they keep Woody, the GM position will probably be filled by someone within the organization.

My guess would be Harold Ellis.

He's been a GM in training for about 5 years now.

I don't think we stray very far from what we have built currently.

Ellis might be the person in place and it doesn't sound like Nique will be considered for the position.

If Dominique ever failed as GM, it would be hard to force him out.

We probably don't make the big changes we are expecting. Woody might get to keep his job afterall.

I am in favor of cleaning out all and refreshing the management staff.

Knight resigns as Hawks' general manager

"The time has come for me to take a break and fully evaluate my future plans," Knight said in a statement released by the organization Wednesday morning. "I am tremendously pleased with what we were able to accomplish this season in reaching the postseason, as the Hawks' return to the playoffs energized the city and our franchise.

"My passion for the franchise has never wavered, but I feel I'm leaving the organization in much better shape than it was in when I took over. I also appreciate the jobs done by Mike (Woodson), his staff and the players during this season. They are most deserving of the praise and accolades they earned during a tough, seven-game series against the Eastern Conference's top team entering the playoffs, and I wish them and the Spirit organization the very best in the future."

"Billy has built a team of athletic, high character players who have enormous potential. Under his leadership, the Hawks were not only the youngest team in this year's playoffs, but have also proven to be the most exciting team Atlanta has seen since the Dominique (Wilkins) era of the 80's. We look forward to building on Billy's success as we continue our efforts to emerge as one of the NBA's elite franchises for a long time to come."

I guess this has to happen when that story broke out about he doesn't have the power (or that the ASG doesn't trust his vision) to fire Woody. He's left the team in good shape after 4 years (he said this was a 5 year rebuilding plan)... the new GM would just have to make one or two good acquisitions and bring in a proven coach and they will be good for long time to come.

Gearon just spoke on 790. He wouldn't comment on BK's status had he not resigned, but wanted to make it clear he asked BK was there anything he could do to make him not resign. He also said he wouldn't be comfortable with Nique as GM.

Did he say why he didn't feel comfortable with Nique as GM?

He said he never wants to be put into position to fire Nique. He said coaches and Gm's come and go. He and ASG want Nique here forever.

Where is LL?

Probably too busy celebrating.

Smart idea not to hire Nique as GM. I agree with that statement, I want him to be around for awhile.

That's the lamest excuse I've ever heard. He really thinks Nique' isn't qualified, but won't say it. Did the Lakers feel that way about Jerry West? Nique is like Joe Louis when he was a doorman at Ceasar's in Vegas. A symbol of the closest thing to greatness the Hawks franchise has.

You may want to wait a minute before you renew your season tickets though. Remember who our owners are.

This doesn't sit right with me.

Is it wrong that I demand more than a simple resignation?

I think he should get 8 lashes with a rattan cane and then he can leave. He's left a lasting mark on this organization, it's only fitting he should carry one as well.
