Deron Williams is the better technical defender. Paul is better at getting steals. I prefer Williams defensively over Paul.

Deron appears strong enough to handle larger opponents, but Paul's quicker. As a defender at the PG position, I like Paul better because he can read opposing points based on game situations. This guy might have a few game-winning steals before the playoffs are over.

Okay I think Paul's D is overrated but this thread is a joke.

If a player gets steals, it automatically means he gambles in the passing lanes and sucks at D.

Paul has problems guarding bigger guys, Deron has problems against quicker guys. Both are above average. I honestly can't tell which one's better.

Considering we're talking about Deron and Paul, yea. I think Chris Paul gets overrated BECAUSE he gets steals. But I think that comes with being the best point gaurd in the NBA. Last season Deron was winning this by a bigger margin, but now people are overrating Paul.

If Oliver's defensive rating means anything, Paul >>> Deron.
Are there any stat that shows Deron to be a good defender?

I like using defensive rating too, but it's a basic stat in it's own right, it doesn't look at all the factors, and it's a MUCH better stat for comparing two teams instead of two players. I don't like PER when comparing two star players, but I think opponent PER is more accurate since you play a variety of players and it's to give a general understanding. Still it has a lot of problems and doesn't look at all the factors either since a lot of it depends on your team's defense (see Boston players).

At least in opponent PER, Williams ranks a lot higher.

Paul's a little better. Both are well below average statistically. Halo Effect.
