Interesting take on the Thibodeau situation

Post#1 » by campybatman » Sun May 11, 2008 5:33 pm

So, is Thibodeau irked by Boston's inability to win games on the road, thus far during the playoffs? Because ESPN raises some good points. And Rivers sounded as if he's fine with allowing Thibodeau that opportunity to pursue a head coaching job toward next season. I wonder will these franchises that are left still with a head coach vacancy decide to move on to their second and third choices of candidates as Boston continues to find themselves in prolonged series.

Things won't get any easier with the prospect of facing Detroit or Orlando in the next round, if they can get by Cleveland, of course. Thibodeau name might not resurface until Boston is done with the playoffs. Again, can these franchises afford to be patient on Thibodeau? It would make a lot of sense to have your head coach in place before the NBA draft.

Sources told ESPN.com that the Celtics were considering giving Thibodeau permission to interview for the vacancy in Chicago, if Boston were able to make quick work of the Cavaliers in their second-round Eastern Conference playoff series. ESPN.com

Thibodeau has been mentioned often in connection with the openings in Chicago and Phoenx. As of now, sources said, no one has made a formal request, though Chicago has made informal inquiries. A sweep would have given the Celtics numerous consecutive days off, and any team wishing to interview Thibodeau would have stood a better chance of gaining permission from Boston's ownership group. Looks like they might have to wait a while to interview Thib.
But I think it's pretty clear he will be the Bulls coach next season. And he deserves it.

Honestly, I think Detroit is a much easier opponent for us than Cleveland. Detroit doesn't really have a single matchup they can really exploit against us in any significant capacity (especially if Rondo can play solid D). They are also a lesser defensive team in comparison with Cleveland.

I thought it was a given that that Thibodeau was a prime head coaching candidate this offseason, and a given he wanted to pursue such an opportunity next season when we only signed him to a one year deal. I didn't read the article, but I see no reason to make anything of this...

Billups has the ability to basically man handle Rondo, that is the big match up problem with the Pistons

In my opinion, Detroit is a far more imposing defensive team, comparable to Boston, than Cleveland. I'm not going by merely what the Cavaliers were able to do against the Celtics in one playoffs game. Boston looked out of sync. No, I would take the starting players of Boston and Detroit over any of the starters of Cleveland. Players capable of playing solid or better defense include: Garnett, Pierce, Perkins and Rondo of the Celtics and Wallace, Prince and Billups of the Pistons. Who of the Cavaliers is a better than average defender in the starting five? The only player I can think of is (Ben) Wallace and he isn't nearly as good as he was playing center and winning defensive player of the year awards.
