Tayshaun Prince.... his role? EVERYTHING!!
This man is a great defender, can play point-forward, is a solid rebounder, can score in a variety of ways with range out to 3. And he's probably got the highest bball IQ of anyone I've ever seen.
He's hasn't missed a game in 5 years and has been a key contributor in the Conference Finals every year since he's entered the league.
best role player in the NBA..

Marion only did that once and those numbers are inflated due to Phoenix's system.
Its the way he gets those numbers more than anything. You can't give the ball to Marion and say "Get us a bucket" like other star players. He's a energy guy/garbage man and hybrid forward who can hit the 3. He's still a very good player, but his style of play is that of a role player and not a star/go to guy.

its hard to draw the line between roleplayers and stars...but at least a roleplayer shouldnt be in the allstar-game (-talk)
my fav roleplayer is bruce bowen and its not like its only the case, coz I'm a spursfan...I just love roleplayers who defend well and can spread the floor...and bruce made a life out of it!
others, that come to mind are prince (even while he is in the ASG-talk sometimes), kurt thomas (yeah, another spur), walton and battier as glueguys, haslem,...
my definition of a good roleplayer is:
- he posesses some above average skills
- he wont do the things he can't do well!
- he usually cant create for himself
that raises the question, if any non-star is a roleplayer, or if there is something between (alston can create for himself..."medistar"?, jerome james cant do anything good..."bust"?)
typical roleplayertypes:
- defender+shooter (bowen)(or korver if only for shooter/zonekiller)
- rebounder/hustler (evans)
- gameorganizer+defender (snow in his best days)
