Not that much. There is no way you can believe that if the Lakers hadn't imploded they still would've lost. Detroit was probably only the 3rd or 4th best team that year. The Pistons had a bunch of circumstances go their way. The Lakers implode, the Timberwolves weren't healthy so they couldn't get to the finals. You could even make a case for the Spurs being better that year but having to face a Lakers team at full strength in the 2nd round. In 04-05 was the year they really looked like a championship team but they had to lose to the Spurs in 7.
I would argue that after they acquired Sheed that season, they jumped to a different level. If they played the whole season the way they played after they got Wallace, nobody would be thinking of them as fluke champions.
Another factor that I think affects peoples perception is that the East representative were so weak in the previous five years. It was hard for people to conceive that the East would have any chance of winning a championship during the Western era of dominance. Fact is though that the 03-04 Pistons were by far the best team to represent the East since the Bulls.
With the defense they played, and team unity and chemistry they had, that 03-04 team was definitely more than worthy of their championship, and absolutely not a fluke.
