He didn't exercise anything. He just played out the contract he was signed to.
He would have had to exersice an early termination option, ie terminate the last year of his contract.
If you want to give up 3million dollars to a) be most likely unemployed and b) help the Orlando Magic, then go for it but it wouldn't have been nearly enough for us to resign Darko.
