OT Krystkowiak interviewed for Perth Wildcats position

Post#1 » by Garbs_7 » Fri May 16, 2008 4:30 am

Nearly choked on my coffee when I read this article in today's local paper. (The West Australian) Sorry cannot find an online link for it but I will give you a basic rundown.

The Perth Wildcats are the local team in the NBL in Australia and are similar to say the Mavericks. Have a pretty good team but always seem to get eliminated in the playoffs without making the final round. We came to an agreement to part ways with our coach Scott Fisher just after the season ended (2-3 months ago) and we ran through a list of possible replacements before it just came down to our assistant, former Bucks player Conner Henry. He thought his pal and former teammate Larry K would be a great replacement and has met with him a few times to try get him to take over the team.

The last few weeks Larry K has been in serious discussions with the Wildcats about the job but in the end, didn't want to move his family to Australia.

Haha wow talk about a step down, coaching in the NBA one year to the NBL the next. I don't think I could have endured another year of LK, but saying that surely he would go from a bad NBA coach to one of the best NBL coaches? Anyway, just thought i would share if anyone was interested.

I think coaches only make between $50-100 grand in the NBL per season MAX. Could be wrong but isn't much.

I would definitely take Aaron Bruce over Bogut at PG, and Brad Newley over Bogut at SG/SF.

Take away the SG, because he can't shoot, and u just described the Bucks of 07/08.....

As to the original topic, wow. In fairness the idea of a season in the sun without the media scrutiny may have appealed to him, but even still, wow.

Shows how terrible of a coach he really was.

Thankfully he isn't in the running for the Melbourne Tigers job.

If Larry K didn't have a family to think about I think this would actually be a pretty sweet gig. Make a hundred grand (plus what he's still owned by the Bucks) to coach basketball and lie around the beaches in Perth for a couple years?

I don't know whether he improved in the last couple of seasons (I haven't had pay tv since I left for uni), but I think Scott Fisher's faults are similar (IMO) to LK.

Besides being a tall american :P , I remember thinking to myself whilst watching Scott in timeouts that he would have to be the worst XOs coach I had ever come across and surely he only got the gig cause he was friends with Vlahov (owner and former teammate).

In our league though the whole preaching defense and using high school motivating techniques (I never saw it... I can just imagine Fisher using them tho)... whilst not really understanding how to coach actual games (esp. the final few minutes) didn't seem to stop the Wildcats from being a perennial top 4 team.

Basically, owners w any sort of financial stability = players w some sort of talent = good result in NBL.

It's not THAT bad getting offered a gig down here, nice weather and some cash. Not to mention the pressure wouldn't be nearly as tough. Look at a guy like Brett Brown (great guy btw), he spent most of his coaching career down here, now he's filled the assistant void left by PJ Carlisimo at the Spurs.

as much as i wasn't a big fan of coach k, i'd love to see him coach a team here.

he can coach my tigers, they don't need a coach, they coach themselves.

They earn just a little more than that.
