What do the Jazz need to get better in the offseason?

This would be my plan:
First:
NBA Draft:
The Jazz need to draft a defensive, shot-blocking big man with their first round pick. Personally, I think that Roy Hibbert would be perfect for this team. He is an Ostertag clone with an offensive game. He can block shots without jumping and would really help the Jazz on the interior as a back up to Memo. Plus, he has a high basketball IQ (whatever that means).

If Hibbert or no other shot-blocking big men are there when the Jazz draft, they should trade the pick.

Second:
Free Agency/Trades:
If the Jazz cannot find a shot blocker who can come in and contribute right off of the bat in the draft, they should trade Jarron Collins, Jason Hart, and either C.J. Miles or Morris Almond for one. They should trade Collins and Hart for anything they can find. Also, there is just not enough room for C.J. and Morris on this team. One of them needs to be moved.

Also, I would not trade any of the starting five. Andrei and Memo really showed up in the playoffs and you don't trade Carlos Boozer unless you get another all-star back in return. Let's not forget, statistically, Boozer had his best year this season and can only get better with more experience. I hate how everyone jumps on his back because he did not play up to his potential in the playoffs. He is human, after all.

Personally, I think that next year is our year, to quote the Chicago Cubs. This team is just too talented to not get there eventually. Especially with the Spurs, Suns, and Mavericks moving towards the end of their respective windows of oppurtunity. Let's not forget how young this team really is. Deron is 23 and will be 24 at the start of next season, Ronnie is 23, Andrei is 27, Carlos is 26, and Memo is 28 and will be 29 at the beginning of next season. If the Jazz can sure up their front court defensive problems and still keep their core in tact, they could win 60+games next season (that is, if they can not have lapses on the road like they had in December and against bad teams.)

I would like this to be our 2008-2009 team:
PG: Deron Williams, Ronnie Price, Draft Pick/Free Agent/Trade
SG: Ronnie Brewer, Kyle Korver, C.J. Miles/Morris Almond (which ever one is not traded)
SF: Andrei Kirilenko, Matt Harpring, C.J. Miles/Draft Pick/Free Agent (if Miles is traded)
PF: Carlos Boozer, Paul Millsap, Draft Pick/Free Agent/Trade
C: Mehmet Okur, 1st round Draft Pick/Trade/Free Agent/Kyrylo Fesenko

If Collins and Hart are still on the team after this season, Kevin O'Connor should be shot.

When exactly did Andrei show up? He was just as inconsistent as Boozer.

The Jazz need a backup C and PG.

Hibbert is exactly what we dont need, we need to get more athletic up front, not slower. CJ is a RFA and probably wont be traded. I think there is plenty of room for Almond and CJ we just need to move AK for depth or perhaps a 1st rd pick that we can use to move up for a good backup PG or C.

FA wise we dont have the cap room to make any moves, we just need to re-sign CJ and move Hart and AK.

Biggest thing is the Jazz need to get more athletic and our front court is possible the least athletic in the west.

Utah has to do everything to get an impact big (ie : trade anybody but deron if necessary) this summer.
I see three guys that would be terrific playing next to Deron and that could anchor our defense , in order :

1/ CHRIS KAMAN
2/ ANDREW BOGUT
3/ EMEKA OKAFOR

Those guys are available for a certain price , Utah has to do what it takes to get one of them.


Kaman would anchor our defense , and offensively he is a real threat in the paint. This is a guy that doesn't leave the paint , he is a real banger with size , you have to defend the basket at all time with him on the floor.

This is what the Jazz has to do this summer , along with improving its spacing offensively. We could see that Brewer was a true liability yesterday on the floor.
AK hadn't made a three pointer in the series before last night too.
I do not think this is as important as our inside defense , but this is definitely a possibility of improvement, jozef explains this very well in his threads.
The solution is : more playing time for Miles and Korver and some improvements from Brewer.

Anyway , we can forget about the draft this year , we already have two players to develop : Fesenko and Almond. Those are our next year's rookies.
As for Kirilenko , i do not think he is that big of a problem. Sure he could have made more threes in this postseason , but he always had a decent +/- in those playoffs. He is a good defender, and will appear even better if we put a good inside defender behind him .
Still a trade won't bother me though. Chemistry wise he doesn't seem to fit in anymore. But clearly he is not a problem.

Priority 1 : Get a impact big that can defend the basket
Priority 2 : Improve the spacing offensively

I agree with keeping this team together for at least another year.

Boozer has been a huge letdown in the playoffs and a good part of the couple of months prior but I'd resist the temptation to trade him for the sake of doing it. I'd do it for a better, more complete player like Elton Brand but Clips won't. Who else, Jermaine O'Neal or Ben Wallace and the like? No thanks.

The Memo-Booz-AK is an atypical frontline but when it works, they complement one another.

Picking an Ostertag clone doesn't excite me. We've got Fes too. I'm for trading the pick for a future one.

Collins, Hart (both expiring) and either the pick or Almond for a veteran big like Jeff Foster or some other.

Keep the team together another year. If it still doesn't work out, at the end of 2009, Booz and Memo will either be expiring contracts or would've opted out, both scenarios likely to help with putting together a new supporting cast for Deron if required.

You all should offer the full MLE to DaSagna Diop. Realistically, he's probably the best defensive option at center available.

I'll post a bigger offseason plan one I've recovered from my dissapointment, but in a nutshell I think the following needs to happen:

1. Time to break up the Boozer/Memo frontcourt. They just cannot defend length and athleticism.

2. Increase team speed. The Lakers completely exposed the Jazz's slow feet.

3. Solve the 2-3 logjam. As good as Ronnie Brewer was at times, I think this is the perfect time to trade him. His inability to consistently hit a jumpshot KILLED us ever time he was in, because his defender just ignores him.

CJ showed us some real flashes. In fact my biggest criticism of Coach Sloan this season was his his inability to find CJ any consistent minutes. I would like to think CJ is ready to make the jump, but I give him about a 2% chance of re-signing with the Jazz.

4. Bring in some veteran's. No more rookies. Trade draft picks for future picks or in packages for players who can contribute NOW. The Jazz's window of opportunity is wide open. Rookies aren't going to help this team. We need guys who have been there before and don't get intimidated.

We need to get more athletic and rid ourselves of AK. He was making vacation plans again this year in lieu of practice. He is not worth nor ever was worth the salay we are paying him.

I dont think we should get rid of AK or Booz. AK's points were not there all the time, But its never going to be when he is the fourth scoring option on this team. I definetly think that we are paying him too much but that is out fault. Hopefully when his contract is up he will sign with us for less money. Boozer had a bad series, but so did Karl Malone from time to time. Our shot blocking center will be in Fesenko. What I want in the draft is a back up point guard such as Mario Chalmers. Price was all right, but had lapses from time to time, which you cant have when you play a max of 10 minutes a game. Have him be the third string and ship hart and collins out of here.

I try to move Boozer, but, after this playoffs I just don't know how much he's hurt his value. Who wants to trade for a guy that shrinks in the playoffs?

I agree with the other poster that suggested Kaman/Okafor/Bogut. Those guys would be my target as I'd like to move Okur to the 4.

I don't think the Jazz do anything though. Our big move was Korver. And I thought he was terrible in the playoffs.

Probably our best hope for getting better is that Ronnie Brewer develops a 3 point shot.

I like the Jeff Foster post,he would fit the bill!The fact is even will our Booz doing nothing and our slow interior Defence we still were a shot away from winning games five and six. Keep it together one more year, get Foster and lets see where that gets us!Little moves will do it for the jazz this offseason!

However if a big move does go down it may still get my approval!

3. Use those players and future picks to get an ATHLETIC, FAST defenseive C, if possible.
4. Promise CJ a bigger role on the team
5. Boozer needs to work hard this offseason, almost exclusively on defense.
6. Everyone needs to practice free throw-shooting



I don't understand why we would get rid of Brewer. It's his second year in the league people, he worked incredibly hard last offseason to get bigger and better and rose up out of NOWHERE to steal the starting 2 spot. What makes you think he won't work hard again this summer? I think his jumpshot will improve for next season.

I'd talk about trading Boozer if i thought it could happen, but honestly there's no chance they give up on him yet. Who knows, maybe patience will pay off.

But if we did, I think our #1 target should be Horford. He almost averaged a double-double in his rookie season while playing solid Defense, he even had his way with Booze to a point. The Hawks admit that he bacame a key team leader, even at his young age. This kid could be a hall-of famer.

Boozer WILL be around next year. He's not going anywhere. I have a strong feeling that next year about mid-season you guys will be laughing at all of these threads saying how bad Boozer is and how much we need to get him out of here.

AK on the other hand needs to go. He is just a waste of money that we could use to turn this team into a championship team.
