Is it possible for Beasley or Rose to go #3?

Post#1 » by wwtsm » Sun May 18, 2008 11:55 pm

Is there any combination of teams winning the top 2 picks that would result in either of these guys being drafted at number 3?

Possible, yes. Likely, no. This probably should be on the Draft Board though.

If Rose goes #1, and the Hawks pick #2, you never know :)

i would tihnk noway because theres a hgue dopoff after beasley and rose

but it would be inetresting if a team like the grizzlies got the 2 pick they have about 5 pg's and they love conley jr but my guess is theyd still take rose and trade conley

If I had to choose one scenario where it did happen it would be:

1. Team 1: Drafts Beasley
2. Minnesota: Drafts OJ Mayo*
3. Team 3: Drafts Rose

I figure Kevin McHale is pretty (Please Use More Appropriate Word) and could actually believe that Randy Foye = Next Super Duper Point Guard, and if that thing on wiretap about the T'Wolves being high on Mayo is true...

It wouldn't be the smartest move in my honest opinion, but it was the most realistic scenario I could think of (even though it's not that likely to happen =P)...

*If this were to occur the T'Wolves would trade down to draft Mayo, so technically Beasley / Rose would still go 1 and 2 overall.

The only way I could see this happening is if a team took Beasley number one and Memphis had the number 2 pick. But they should just take Rose and trade Conley.

IT IS POSSIBLE. Many teams are high on OJ Mayo

If Minnesota got the number 2 pick perhaps? If Rose went number 1 would they take Beasley when they seem to have there PF of the future.

If there were a different #2 pick than either Beasley or Rose it would have to be OJ Mayo. Brook Lopez, Jerryd Bayless, and Anthony Randolph are simply are not worth a top two selection (I rate Lopez as a mid first-rounder, myself).

Here is the order that these teams' respective GMs SHOULD draft the big three:

Miami: PG Rose>F Beasley>PG Mayo...Rose/Wade/Marion/Haslem/Blount. If Marion stays, I find it unlikely that he would complemenet Beasley well. OJ Mayo and Dwyane Wade are too similar.
Seattle: PG Rose>F Beasley>G Mayo...Rose/Durant/Green/Wilcox/Collison. Earl Watson/Luke Ridnour aren't getting it done, but there may not be enough shots to go around in a Durant/Mayo backcourt. Beasley would result in too many Fs starting at once: Watson/Durant/Green/Beasley/Wilcox.
Minnesota: Beasley>Mayo>Rose...Foye/Jaric or McCants/Brewer/Beasley/Jefferson. Al Jefferson would do well with a perimeter-oriented PF next to him. If Minnesota is dead-set at having Foye start at PG, then OJ Mayo would start at SG over McCants.
Memphis: Beasley>Mayo>Rose...Conley/Miller/Gay/Beasley/Milicic. Very simple. Memphis has too many pass-first PGs (Conley, Crittenton) to welcome Rose aboard.
New York: Rose>Mayo>Beasley...Rose/Crawford/Jefferies/Randolph/Lee or Curry. D'Antoni could use a play-making PG to run this uptempo offense. One that isn't named Stephon Marbury. Randolph would have to be dealt in order to bring in Beasley.
LAC: Rose>Mayo>Beasley...Rose/Maggette/Thornton/Brand/Kaman. As of now, the Clippers don't *have* a point guard. Fairly simple.
Milwaukee: Rose>Beasley>Mayo...Rose/Redd/Yi/Villanueva/Bogut. Milwaukee already has Mo Williams at PG and Michael Redd at SG, but the last thing they need is another F tweener.
Charlotte: Beasley>Rose>Mayo...Felton/Richardson/Wallace/Beasley/Okafor. Unless the Bobcats are giving up on Felton, Charlotte decides to bring frontcourt scoring to aid Emeka Okafor.
Chicago: Mayo>Rose>Beasley...Hinrich/Mayo/Deng/Thomas or Gooden/Noah. Fairly simple. Without moving one of Gordon or Hinrich, Rose is an unlikely pick. Mayo can start ahead of Larry Hughes. Beasley would hamper the development of Tyrus Thomas.
New Jersey: Beasley>Mayo>Rose...Harris/Carter/Jefferson/Beasley/Williams. Only logical pick. Mayo would be taken if Carter were to be traded.
Indiana: Rose>Beasley/Mayo...Rose/Dunleavy/Granger/Murphy/O'Neal. Jamaal Tinsley is holding this team back more than anybody else. If JO were traded, Beasley would make sense.
Sacramento: Rose>Beasley>Mayo...Rose/Martin/Artest/Moore/Miller or Hawes. As of now, this team doesn't have a point guard. Is Beno Udrih the answer? Mayo would interfere with the scoring of Kevin Martin.
Portland: Rose>Mayo>Beasley...Rose/Roy/Webster/Aldridge/Oden
Golden State: Beasley>Mayo>Rose...Davis/Ellis/Jackson/Beasley/Biedrins

It is safe to say that Derrick Rose is the surest pick in this draft.

^As you can see, IMO, there are seven teams that should/could/would take Mayo in the top two, rather than Rose/Beasley or Beasley/Rose.

I agree that Mayo could cause such a thing to happen...

But I wouldn't count out GMs getting enamored with Lopez (big man who has some skill) or Deandre Jordan (athletic big man with upside).

We've seen it before with Darko Milicic, Sam Bowie, Kwame Brown, Olowokandi... it's not too far from the realm of possibility... especially with a specimen like Jordan available...

It would be foolish, but I wouldn't rule it out...

I think Portland would have to consider Mayo over Beasley as well.

^Portland is a tough call, since only Rose is a good fit for them. Beasley would have to play SF and Mayo PG. OJ, a 6'5" scoring PG, would be semi-redundant with Brandon Roy, a 6'6" combo guard that averages 6 apg.
Although, you are probably right that Portland is worse off with Jarrett Jack/Steve Blake/Sergio Rodriguez at PG than they are with James Jones/Travis Outlaw/Martell Webster at SF.

If seen a wiretap article on the Wolves being high on Rose, an article about trading 2nd rounders, and some rumors about not drafting Beasley, but I haven't seen anything about Mayo. Could you please post a link.

Back on topic, I really don't see any situations in which Rose and Beasley aren't picked in the top 2. Even if the one of the teams drafting in those positions really doesn't want either of those guys for whatever reason, they'll still draft whichever one is available and trade them later.

Everything that I've read about the situation suggests to me that the Minni FO realizes that Foye is a combo guard and can be utilized in either guard spot, so they're not "dead-set" at having Foye play point. So, considering that, I would say that the draft board would go: Rose>Beasley>>>Mayo. Rose/Foye/Brewer/ Gomes or Jefferson/ Jefferson or FA/2nd round Center.
