Where does Pierce Game 7 Show Rank All Time on Celtics List?

Post#1 » by magicfan4life05 » Mon May 19, 2008 3:35 pm

Larry Bird, Boston Celtics
In the 1988 Eastern Conference semifinals, the Celtics and Hawks played a tremendous game that will be forever remembered for the fourth quarter shootout between Larry Bird and Dominique Wilkins. Bird entered the fourth quarter with 14 points. He then scored 20 points in the fourth quarter to finish with 34 points in a 118-116 Celtics win.

Bill Russell, Boston Celtics
In the 1962 NBA Finals, Bill Russell had 30 points and a Game 7-record 40 rebounds, as the Celtics won 110-107 in overtime. The game famously ended with Bob Cousy avoiding defenders while dribbling out the clock.

Bill Russell, Boston Celtics
In the 1966 NBA Finals, Bill Russell helped coach Red Auerbach retire with a title. After a Game 1 loss to the Lakers, Auerbach said he would step down after the season and Russell would take over as coach. The Celtics fought back in the series and forced a Game 7. Russell had 25 points and 32 rebounds in Game 7 as the Celtics won 95-93, and Auerbach retired on top of his profession.

Dave Cowens, Boston Celtics

During the 1975-75 NBA FInals, Cowens was the hero in Game 7, scoring 28 points as the Celtics brought the title back to Boston for the first time in five years.

Larry Bird, Boston Celtics
He provided one of the greatest moments in playoff history in the conference finals against Detroit. The Pistons had a one-point lead and possession of the ball with five seconds left in the pivotal Game 5 at Boston Garden. Bird stole an inbounds pass from Isiah Thomas and fed Dennis Johnson for a layup and a shocking victory. Detroit won Game 6, but the Celtics prevailed in Game 7, 117-114, to advance.

Stars always rise to the occasion in game 7 and who why they are so good, it's the most important game in the careers of some players and theres simply nothing like a game where both teams are on the verge of elimination and the celtics have a great tradition of game 7 performances.

Honestly, both LBJ and Pierce put on incredible games, but obviously Pierce's performance will be considered 'better' because his team won. So where would you put it on the all time celtics performances? He completely put his team on his shoulders and led them throughout the game offensively and in the clutch of a 4th quarter game 7 for the right to go on to the conference finals?

Few people have ever had a better offensive quarter than Bird did, but I'm leaning to putting the whole game at both ends of the court ahead of Bird's famous one, as per the other thread I started on the subject.

I think Lebron was in a groove, and the fact that his shooting was kind of meh was a testament to Boston's defense on him, led by Pierce.

April 1st 1973, veteran Boston Celtic John Havlicek scored a career-high 54 points against the Atlanta Hawks, setting a Celtic playoff record.

A lot of people will say that this was Pierce's best playoff performance, and it's usually like that when it's the most recent game and the energy and media is all over it. However, Pierce had a better game in my opinion, vs. the Nets earlier in his career. This one was GREAT, don't get me wrong, but it would rank #2 all-time for Pierce, IMO.

Just because I'm rooting against the celtics this year does not mean i do not respect them. That's actually a compliment because everyone wants to see the favorite/best team go down unless it's their own and I'm just like that. Please do not call me a hater, because I do not do that, i respect all the teams just in certain times I have preferences, and it helps when you place bets. I do know why you are attacking me on all my posts, i'm just one person rooting against them, but still respect them.

anyway, g/l and even if they win, ill still be happy for kg anyway

Sam Jones had 47 in a Game 7 against Oscar Robertson, who had 43. That's the Celtics record for a Game 7.

Pauls best performance in my mind was the greatest comeback in playoff history game against NJ, nobody and I mean nobody could stop him. I think the NJ game you are talking about was a December in January 01 or 02 Where Obrien was tossed and Pierce scored like 36 points in NJ, if so Ill agree that yes it was a great game but not a playoff game.

I think this one is Paul's BEST overall playoff performance. He was doing it all on both ends.

The NJ Greatest Comeback game was just Pierce going off in ONE quarter...it was not a good game for Pierce before that last quarter.

Pierce's 46 points against the Sixers in Game 5 of the 2002 playoffs was another note worthy performance from Pierce, but we didn't really need every ounce of that performance like we did yesterday.

Pierce also had 40 points (21 in the 4th) 11 rebounds 6 assists 4 steals and 21 for 21 from the FT line in Game 1 against the Pacers in Indiana in 2003 1st Round Playoffs, might be his 2nd best over all playoff performance....he helped us steal this game on the road after we were down 13 in the 4th, huge game!

This game really stands out to me, we lose that game and we would be down 0-2, Pierce def put us on his back in that game 21/21 free throws was insane

No, I was wrong on the team. It was 46 earlier in that playoff season against Philly. It was the same year that he did his thing on NJ in the regular season; that was me getting them mixed up. I thought his game against Philly (an elimination game, ironically) was the best playoff performance of his career. That game against NJ might have been his best scoring game ever. We've seen some excellent all around games throughout the year, but offensively, that game against NJ was probably his best.

To me this one the best one ever..not because he was the best ever. But because it was more improbable.

It would be like Chuck Norris taking down Kimbo Slice. An older guy rising up to steal something from a young guy one last time. Sure we can talk about those other games but who was he matched up against? You don't even really remember.

This game he had to go against (at least some of the time) the great Lebron James - a true to life physical freak. His degree of difficulty on those shots was borderline insane. He makes it LOOK easy but IRL those shots are hella hard to hit..

I do think PP was more "unstoppable" back in the day. But like James had no worries (as he was young and likely thought he would back over and over again) but when you consider PP realized this might be his final shot and defining game it's all the more impressive.

I was at that game. It wasn't close to last night's performance. New Jersey imploded in that game. They were clearly the better team overall, as they showed by whupping our ass the rest of that series and the next year. But they got a case of nerves and looked like **** in the fourth quarter of that game. Not that I didn't enjoy the whole thing.

To me last night was Pierce's best performance because he showed his maturity as a player. Nothing looked forced, there were no groan or roll-your-eye moments. He played within the flow of the game. He was up against a great player who was having a great game, and Pierce was better. If it weren't for Pierce, we wouldn't be advancing.

For a lot of Pierce's career, I haven't wanted to see the ball in his hands at the end of games. Last night changed that for me. I trust him now.

i think it obviously comes down to

This game, he was a force on both ends
the 46 point show against philly
and the 40 11 6 against the pacers

paul pierce is an amazing player who doesnt get enough credit, i mean look at those games in the playoffs, thats what legends are made of hopefully we can get a title with him and send him off into celtics lore the way he deserves
