Freeney Negotiations Gone Cold?

Freeney Negotiations At A Stand Still
1st April, 2007 - 5:08 pm
Boston Globe - The Colts' negotiations on a contract extension with defensive end Dwight Freeney are ice-cold.

"Right now, they're frozen," team president Bill Polian said. "We made an offer prior to free agency and the agent chose not to respond to it. We're presuming he'll play the season with the tag. There is still time to get a deal done, the deadline is July 15, so we'll just have to wait and see what happens."

Freeney was assigned the franchise tag, which would pay him more than $9.4 million on a one-year deal should he sign. [READ]

Polian has never missed before on a longterm deal that he really wanted done (I don't think he ever wanted an Edge one done). I'm really hoping this gets done because it will give us more cap room this year as the money will be spread out annualy. Either way, I expect Freeney to have a rebound season in terms of his sacks.

Yeah, Freeney is too good of a player to have another bad year. What did he have this past year, 5 sacks? That won't happen again. I will take a guess and say 10 at the least.

Either way, Polian needs to ink him long term. As much as it didn't look like it this season, even when Freeney isn't directly impacting the play via pressure, he is impacting because he is usually causing either two lineman or a lineman and a back to block him, freeing more space for others.

Polian will get 'er done.

Polian will get it done. I have all the confidence in the world with the Colts organization. Cant say the same for another professional mens team located in Indy.

Who's on the other side of the line, and at DT? I'd be more worried about the state of the rest of your line, rather than Freeney.

Without a nice gap-plugging DT in there, you guys are still gonna have troubles with Run defense like last season, when the Titans and the Jags both carved you guys up on Rushing....

McFarland plays DT and possibly Simon, if he isn't still injured\sick.

Usually we have Josh Thomas or Raheem Brock alongside McFarland, and Mathis on the other side of them.

We have Booger and Brock in the middle. Booger came into his own in the playoffs (at a pro bowl level) and Brock started to make great strides against the run usuing his ability to get penetration. There is no doubt the Colts could use a Justin Harrell, DeMarcus Tyler, or Turk McBride for depth though. It just depends on which Colts' d-line shows up...the Titans-Jags one or the playoffs one, and I think that will be a group effort.

what most people dont understand about the colts defense is that its a defense full of schemes. every man covers his spot on the field. d-free's job is to put pressure on the qb and stop the sweep or toss... and he does a very good job at doing that. this past year he had some nagging injuries which stopped his production but he was still double covered just because he is such a threat. we should lock this dude up immediately. if it wasnt for freeney, mathis's career would be over. mathis benifits so much of the double team that freeney gets its rediculous.

i'm pretty sure in this years draft we will go after a DT... someone like justin harrell would be prefect for us. hes a big guy that can stop the run up the middle. i can see us going harrell, then buster davis with the cards 3rd rounder (edge), then hopefully kenny irons or a slot wideout in the late 3rd. Harrell woulda been a mid 1st rounder last year, hes got alot of up side and would be perfect in a colts uni. i would like to say away from DeMarcus Tyler, dude is nothing but trouble. polian is a type of guy that says away from troubled players with a bad history in the draft.

all i know to say is.... TRUST IN POLIAN... dude is a genius.

what a list.

Polian is the best at what he does in the NFL. I trust that we will resign Freeney. I also think that the rest of the defensive line will be fine and have good seasons.
