Cavs have 30 million in cap space this summer

The Cavaliers could have as much as $30 million in expiring contracts to work with this summer, with the possibility of dealing them to teams looking for cap room in the summer of 2009.

That's $30 million in EXPIRINGS, not actual cap space. That's potential money next offseason, not this one, and even then, they still wouldn't be 30 million under the cap.

Look for the Cavs to try to strike it rich around the trade deadline much like the Lakers did with Gasol.

30 million in expiring contracts does not equal 30 million in cap space. it's useful for trades but we still have the advantage when it comes to outright signings.

just looked at both the article and their cap figure. its in the summer of 09 so who cares? if we wait till then we'll have alot more than the cavs to worry about as far as cap space goes. also that number requires big z and varejao to not pick up their players option

I think this means the Cavs are more likely to go after a Michael Redd or JO type guy. Who knows what superstars will be available at the trade deadline next year, but Lebron will not be very happy if they don't do something big in the offseason.

I could see the Cavs doing a deal similar to the one that brought Ray Allen & KG to the celtics. Allen was acquired for Szczerbiak, West, and the #5. The The Cavs obviously do not have many assets, but they'll be able to fetch a starter for expirings and picks.
