I don't know but spending money on Elton, Corey, Cat and re-signing Sam gives us hope.

It does seem to appear that Sterling is indeed changing his ways because of the exact reasons listed above. It is Sterling, so we may never be 100% sure, but the last couple off-seasons have given us reason to hope. As fate would have it, there are some opportunities out there for us to grab some nice players at nice prices, if the brass plays smart. The front office's intentions may be good, but I still think its too early to give them credit for their intelligence just yet. Time will tell.

Sterling and the front office have been matching restricted free agent offers in the past couple of seasons and trying to sign free agents such as Kobe and Arenas, but he still isn't a Mark Cuban type owner. I'd be shocked if the Clippers were willing to pay the luxury tax.

The key is spending money wisely and with a purpose, not spending money on a guy like Kittles or this proposed trade with the Cavs where the Clippers receive Szczerbiak for Maggette

It sounds like you are going with the Isiah Thomas approach. IT's owner spent lots of money like Cuban does. If you think the only way to win means spending money and paying the luxury tax then you are mistaken.

Spending money is not the only way to win, shrewd talent and cap management is the way to win. Once you put together a roster capable of 50+ wins, the attendance revenue will follow and you will likely have some flexibility to go over the cap to keep a core group.

I guess it can be said the Clippers have some cap management skills, although it's not that hard to just not spend money. But the Clippers have not shown that they are able to simultaneously manage/grow their roster talent while maintaing a reasonable cap.

Who really cares whether they traded for Kerry Kittles or not? It makes no difference to the long-term situation of the franchise.

I don't completely blame the Clippers for the current situation. Livingston and Brand suffered devastating injuries, and the Clippers have spent some money to sign guys like Mobley, TT, and re-sign Kaman (whether those were good or bad moves is a separate issue, at least they put some money out there.)

I think Sterling would spend the money if he was 100% sure he would field a consistent winner (any team would take Kobe at a max contract, because he's obviously worth much more than a max contract.) But unfortunately that's cheapness manifested in a different way. He'll never hand over personnel decisions to a GM who will really put together a plan and make some bold (which is different than extravagant) moves needed to compete against a bunch of better-run NBA franchises. If you really want to win in this league, you have to take some calculated risks, and Sterling has not shown a desire to do so. But hey, we can revel in our cap management...

So instead, we're currently sorta stuck in the middle. We have some pieces, but we're back to looking at the lottery as the annual 'glimmer of hope' for the team.
