Looks like the ASG and their GM deach just got narrowed down for them. I don't blame them.
Having Woodson imposed on me would make me cringe too.

Wow....interesting development.
Well, the leading candidate drops out...and I don't blame him.
Too many uncertainties here with the Hawks.
I feel that either Billy King, Cavs Asst GM and former Hawks Asst GM Chris Grant or an in-house person (Harold Ellis or Steve Smith) will be hired. These candidates, albeit not the best one's will have one thing in common....the familiarity with the coach. I dont think an outside GM from another organization is intrigued by not having a say in the coaching hires.
Because it seems that the ASG doesn't want to or plan on parting with Woody June 30th. I think they are prefacing their interviews with that notion that "we have our coach."
The longer they wait, the more chance of Woody getting an extension. And I haven't heard anything about any coaching short-list or a list of potential candidates. This also leads me to believe that Woody will get an extension.

I'm wondering this too. Even if the ownership group wanted the coach gone, they'd probably can him through the GM - not do it outright.
The interview where Gearon said he was happy with the job Woody did is probably where people get the idea that he's staying but again, that is probably just good ownership form.

Woodson's contract is up- there is no need to fire him. The new GM would be the one to extend the contract if he chose to. If woodson was going to be kept no matter who the GM is then woodson would have his contract extended by now.
And I wouldn't have let BK hire a replacement coach either. He was just trying to throw woodson under the bus and blame all the team's problems on him. That doesn't have anything to do with letting a competent GM pick the guy he wants.

It doesn't matter how incompetent you feel BK is...if the ASG really was dumb enough to try to bring him back another year(as reported)AFTER not allowing him to fire the coach last year then there's no telling what these idiots would do. We will find out soon enough...
This is a bad day for the Hawks. I really wanted Lindsey. I'm going to be pissed if we hire some lame GM and Lindsey turns into the next Kevin Pritchard in 2-3 years. Finding out yesterday Petrie turned us down sucks too. We should have just fired BK over a year ago and gotten this over with already.

Well, my thinking is....why wait this long? I mean, Charlotte, New York, Dallas, Milwaukee, Miami, Phoenix and Chicago have already made their coaching decisions....with Phoenix and Chicago yet to hire one....but if the intention is to have the new GM have a say in the coach, it would look better (If I were a prospective candidate) if everything is cleared out before I came here. It's almost a month before the draft...and d-day for Woody, and the ASG needs to get on the ball and make some good, sound decisions fast. Because I would like us to at least be a player in this year's draft....via trades.

Sekou Smith has said that his feeling is that they plan on keeping him. The BK resignation after his trying to fire Woodson seems like an indication that ASG wanted to keep Woody so BK took leave.
I hope you're right KB, I want a coaching move.
The ASG also said they were surprised by BK's resignation. Could it be that they planned onkeeping them both. BK just had enough of the constraints and inept coaching.

I know that....maybe they have expressed to him that whom ever they hire will have the final say. But the fact that they've not said whether or not he will be retained still raises questions about the direction the ASG wants to go in. Why not say....Woody, we are not going to extend you past June 30th...and let him walk?
Now, is that firing him?? Well, yes and no. More 'no' than 'yes'. It's a tricky situation.
Telling him that they won't extend him can at least give Woody time to interview and get another job opportunity elsewhere in the league (as an asst.) since these other teams are further along in the process. And the new head coaches are starting to form their staffs.
I think back to when BK had just been promoted from interim GM to GM....yes, he fired then coach Terry Stotts. But he did it as soon as the season was over. Without any consideration, BK pulled the trigger. It was
straight with no chaser.
This case is different though.
I think if the ASG waits until June 30th to just let him walk....it's not beneficial to either Woody or the ASG. If they were going to let him walk, they would have done it by now IMO. Having him wait make it appear like they want to keep him
It doesn't make the job attractive to an outsider (Lindsey, Sheppard, etc.) coming in IMO. I've maintained that if they don't make up their minds on Woody soon...an in-house hire MAY happen. Crazy situation though.

You are making it seem like the two options are the new GM will only be able to hire a new coach or the new GM won't have a choice in the matter.
My line of thinking is that the new GM would decide whether or not he wanted Woody. If he did, he could rehire, if not, he'd find a new guy and let Woody's contract expire.

No, the point I'm making is why not clear it all out....so all that the new GM needs to do is to hire 'his guy' and move 'forward' from there. From a candidates view, they'd feel like this should have been taken care of before they arrived...the slate already cleaned. Having to deal with Woody's situation would be taking steps 'backwards' before going 'forward.' Because really, a new GM will want 'his' guy...period.
Having a coach still here doesn't make the GM job attractive.

Probably because the ASG have voiced the fact that they support Mike Woodson. When I heard one of the owners on the local AM station a week ago it really sounds like Coach Woodson would be back next season no matter what.
