Again, we've said for years that Dirk is difficult to build around. But if you can't have a traditional superstar, Dirk's the next best option. Or, would you rather have a lesser star who's more traditional?
As I see it, we tried to build a traditional team in a league that was transitioning from traditional to versatile. A traditional C who can't score is no longer necessary. This is a perimeter-oriented league with perimeter-oriented stars. You've got have an active, mobile team to defend that. We don't. A frontcourt of two PF/Cs (one of which would be Dirk) is part of the answer. A backcourt of two guys who can defend anyone on the wing is another. A SF who can defend most anyone is another. We don't have the pieces to accomplish that, IMO.
Of course, factor in offense, and there's a whole other set of problems.
