Because NBA players used to not use college as just an NBA stepping stone. After games, they would return to their other jobs as master chemists.

Lasik. Some players used contacts but every now and then they would lose one on a hard foul. I recall it happening to Pippen lol.

I sport goggles in my rec league though.

Players don't get poked in the eye as much anymore?
The broken nose has taken over, thus the development of the mask.

Yes, they had contacs back in the days, but now there are soft contacs( i dont know they name in english) who are way more comfortable to play bball with them.

I remember when Ben Wallace rocked the googles for 2 games for the Pistons

I love that picture of Thurl Bailey, my dad used to try to get me to buy that card everytime we went to the Card shop because his picture had been flipped and his jersey was printed backwards.

Looking back I wish I would have done it now.

Kareem started wearing goggles because he had the cornea of his eye scratched back in the mid-70's. They were worn to protect an injured eye, not to replace contact lenses.

Soft contacts lenses go back further than some of you think. I believe they were invented in the early 70's. Soft contacts were an improvement over the hard contacts, but wearing hard contacts weren't that bad or the equivalent of having sandpaper against your eye.

The NBA is far less physical than it was years ago so there are probably less eye injuries.
