Fact or Fiction? Finding out the "NBA is fixed"...
...is a bigger story than Steroids in the MLB.
With the Tim Donaghy scandal comes a new allegation (credibility is highly questionable of course) of the entire NBA being in on the conspiracy ultimately deciding who wins and who loses.
Supposedly some COACHES along with certain PLAYERS are in on how the games would end up and affected the games as much as corrupt officials. Now obviously all of this stuff is pretty far fetched and incredible but IF....IF it was true and we now find out that the NBA is like the WWE or it is scripted like a movie....would it in fact be a bigger story than Steroids in the MLB or heck Steroids in the Sports in general?
I would say "FACT".
Steroids is only one element of cheating and the cover up by MLB and the blind eye by the federal government is huge huge news. But no one can tell me that we didn't know about it. No one actually believed that on some level steroids wasn't being used. I mean come on....it was plain obvious that steroid use was immense and frequent in baseball - not really shocking.
To script an entire sport for years and sell it off as authentic and true is incredibly hard to manage and also keep secret. How many people would literally have to be paid off to keep this hidden...it's pretty much unthinkable and even though the NBA is global now and a billion dollar industry - money alone couldn't stop one person, one official, or one key "player" from stepping forward and leaking this dirty secret so it's practically impossible. To actually make it happen is well - astonishing.
And the impact of this "lie" would be gross. How many of our heros would be tainted forever? Would MJ still be the GOAT if we now new that he was being "pushed" or favored? Would the legacy of the greatest winner in the history of sports (Russell) now feel kind of empty and meaningless? Countless of perspectives would be changed and how many millions of fans would feel like they just invested their entire fandom in a sport of fraud.

This isnt sports anymore. Its entertainment and a business. Well never know what really goes on in the NBA, and well never know if what Tim Donaghy is saying is true about there being alot more refs out there doing illegal things.
One thing is certain that this guy Tim Donaghy aint gonna be the last.
And im sure he wasnt the first either probably, the NBA is pretty good at keeping things under wraps it seems..

i agree, first stern says all the information is out publicly and everything is open, but then he says he wants to talk to donaghy again....

Why would Tim make this stuff up? I have bet on games for years and seen some stuff that was so obvious that the game was fixed it was rediculous. We are overlooking this as fans because we want to have something to believe in. If this gets out of the bag completely is would be absolute chaos. I saw Richard Hamilton turn the ball over under the hoop with 2 seconds left on purpose to cover a point spread. I was at the game and I sure he did it.
BOTTOM LINE
Tim Donaghy will end up dead if he keeps runnin his mouth

If they(the mafie) bet on games and draft lottery they wont do it in Vegas but in Macao or somewere in the Pacific.
I don't think that the steroids are big problem, NBA athletes need different ways to get energy than the normal people like us. Just like NASA cannot send her astronauts with bags of steaks and Taco Bells on space mission, but uses specialy designed "space" foods.
F it was true and we now find out that the NBA is like the WWE or it is scripted like a movie
No way, the NBA is having way more staff(from cleaners to David Stern) a to keep it in secret.
would it in fact be a bigger story than Steroids in the MLB or heck Steroids in the Sports in general?
Yes, definitely. Unlike MLB, NBA is global org with fans from Asia, Europe, SAmerica, Africa.
Would MJ still be the GOAT if we now new that he was being "pushed" or favored?
No, the GOAT will be someone from the nonNBA league - Belov or Kurland.

Same here I remember how Rodney Roggers made a 3 ball when his team was down 15 to cover the 12.5 point spread. Or when some scrub from the Suns pulled a coast to coast and shot a 3 ball to save the 11.5(or something) point spread.

Again I would like to point out there is no hard evidence that what Donaghy is saying is true.
To fix an entire sport and its league according to a script you would have to have EVERY official, every team and it's owner, every coach and every player in on it.
It's completely out of the question of reasonable logic.

If the league was fixed there's no way the Spurs would have 4 titles. There's no way the Pistons would've been the best team in the East the last few years. There's no way the Knicks would've been as $hitty as they have been for the last few years. There's no way the Boston Celtics wouldn't have gotten the first pick in the 97 and/or 07 draft. There's no way the Wizards when Jordan was playing wouldn't have made the playoffs. There's no way there would be such a huge discrepancy between the East and West since the Bulls dynasty. Do I need to go on?

I wouldn't go as far to say that the games are fixed but I'm 100% sure that players know the spread and try to cover it.

It explains why Greg Oden's knee went out! Had to make sure a west coast minor-market team didn't make it big! Dun dun dun!
But seriously, I would doubt Donaghy was the only one. Stern & Joel Litvin mouthing off that what he's saying are just lies from a convicted felon makes them look bad too. Who's fault was it that they weren't keeping close enough tabs on their refs to allow one to become corrupted? It now looks suspect that Stern wants to talk to him face to face, all the while over overly denying the accusations. It just seems like they're going to such great lengths to hammer about how full of s&#$ Donaghy with every quote they make, it seems like they can't just go "we highly doubt these claims are true, but we want to make absolutely sure". No instead they say things like:
