McCants + Jaric for expirings?
I just need a value check here, as I may be over-valueing both guys a bit.
McCants hasn't shown what he can do in a full season healthy, but people worry about his attitude and fit (although few worry about his work ethic).
Jaric makes an average of $7.1 mil over the next three years, but he's useful.
If we draft MAYO, would you deal McCants and Jaric for expirings, to add to all the salary coming off the books next year?

I guess I'm neutral. I'm all for trading Jaric. Although he is useful, his contract hurts and he takes PT away from the young guys we need to develop. I also think Brewer can eventually fill his role.
McCants would be a great instant offense guy off the bench IF he is willing to take that role (a big IF, I think). If we draft Mayo, I'd be willing to trade Shad but I am hoping to use him to get a center instead of expirings.

Trade someone for "expirings" is a bit vague... I'd like to know what 2009 FA's you want to target and if they're a need or even more valuable than a 15ppg(+)scorer and as Devilzsidewalk pointed out... a 3 position backup player (albeit an overpaid one).
I definitely want McCants and Jaric on this team... they both have considerable value in my opinion.

To me, expirings are only helpful when we're able to use that cap space to add a difference maker or two. Right now, the team has such a negative perception around the league (at least based on the comments of the folks on the Boo-yah network), that we'd have to grossly overpay to get a FA to come here.
Let's continue to build the talent of the team, and worry about clearing cap space when that one FA signing could actually make the difference in playoff success... At the moment, it seems more likely that clearing cap space would just save Taylor some dough. Which I don't find all that exciting.

There's may only be a small window to create cap space. After next year, you're looking at an extension for Foye, and after that Brewer. If things go well with the young players, next offseason may be the only time the Wolves can free up max cap space.

At this point I don't see McCants starting on many teams in the NBA. If he is willing to come off the bench and be the man off the bench I see no reason to trade him. Eventaully we will be looking for a guy who can bring offense off the bench for us, we have a a quality candidate for that role right now. Why not use next year as an audition spot?
If Shad proves he can come off the bench and get 15+ points for us then I say we should keep him on the squad. If Foye or Mayo are cold Shad can come in and fill in their role. On top of that if we let Bassy and Snyder go, we will need a backup guard pretty badly anyway. We already got one so why toss him?

Do you guys think we will consider bringing him back next season?
I just can't see it personally.
Unless we trade McCants and/or Jaric I don't see him likely being resigned. If both of those two were in a package for a big or expirings then I could see him signed to a small deal to help the bench. I liked a lot of what I saw from him, but think right now we're heavy at the wing position and even if Mayo can play some PG, Snyder isn't likely to be signed without some other deal(s) being made.

Yea but does Shad do everything else those players do in the NBA? Scoring isn't the only stat that matters. I'm also not saying that Shad couldn't start, I'd start him here if we don't get Mayo, but as he stands right now I don't think most team would be willing to hand him the keys to the starting SG position.

I agree that scoring isn't the only stat and anyone can agree that McCants would likely be behind OJ Mayo on the depth chart by mid-season.
What irks me is the fact that most people don't seem to realize that its completely assinine to start someone like Marko Jaric or Kirk Snyder over a talented player like McCants, and then try to sell the idea of that player as a "6th man." I mean, come on!
Your best players are supposed to start.
Jason Terry behind Kidd. Understandable.
Barbosa behind Bell/Nash. Understandable.
McCants behind Snyder/Jaric. No. No. No. Inexcusable and insulting that they try to play this off retroactively as some sort of strategy. Wittman is clueless and i can't believe how many are duped into thinking McCants as 6th man is a legit plan.
Many teams might not hand him the keys, and I guess you're right about that. But there is no other coach in the league that would start Jaric, Snyder, Brewer over McCants.
I think i took you saying he wouldnt start on those teams to mean he's not talented enough... I guess you meant there are other teams who have more talent at the SG position which is obviously inarguable.
Our team isn't one of them though.

The question is impacted the most by the draft.
If we grab Lopez than we still have minutes at the swing spots for Shad and Jaric. As devil said, Shad is a good 6th man scorer and Jaric can back up 3 spots. If we draft lopez and lose Gomes we almost need Jaric and McCants.
If we draft Mayo then we have a logjam. Even more so if we keep gomes (who I think is a better fit/player than Shad or Jaric if we got Mayo)

Tell that to Manu.
