Some Hawks GM 411....

Post#1 » by fo_o_fo_404 » Fri May 23, 2008 6:08 pm

I have been trying to get some info about the new Hawks GM since BK stepped down. And in the midst of "hush hush" nature the ASG has gone about it's search, I have finally managed to get some very good and reliable information to report to Hawks RealGM nation....

The buzz I am hearing....and word from a VERY relaible source is that Cavs Asst GM Chris Grant will most likely be hired very soon.

Now how soon?? It could be after Memorial Day or at the end of the month. But Grant is thought highly of by the ASG since his days here as an Asst. GM to BK. He has an extensive background in scouting, and was Director of Scouting before being promoted to Asst. GM by BK.

Also, Grant, 36, started with the Hawks in 1995 as a ball boy....worked his way to a video coordinator, and then to various scouting positions.

Barring any last minute...change of heart by the ASG, Chris Grant will be the guy!

You heard it here first.....

So he has worked under Babcock,BK,and Danny Ferry? He may turn out to be good but the fact that 3 incompetent GM's(who get everything else wrong) thought highly of him isn't a good sign IMO.

I have mixed feelings about this. On the one hand at least they aren't hiring a retread that failed somewhere else. However they could just be looking for someone to be Gearon's lap dog.

If he comes in and hires a coach other than Woody i will feel better about him.

It will be interesting to see if he makes any public comments about some of BK's moves and his opinion of them at the time.

Not sure if it's + or - but it looks like he's home grown and perhaps grew up a Hawks fan since he did start as a ballboy. At the very least it could make for a potentially interesting story.

Anyway, if that is the hire in the end and he is a Hawks fan of the variety on this board I see that as a solid foundation to work with. I echo the fear that he worked under Babs, BK and Ferry, although maybe he had an even closer hand look and understanding at what not to do as a GM.

Same here. I hope this isn't someone they hired because they figured he would fit well with Woody.

I'm guessing we'll find out soon enough.

ASG might as well just give Woodson a life time contract. I will give this guy a chance....screw it he has to prove himself first. Until further notice as someone said at HS. This guy nickname should be "GYM" because he will be Gearon Yes Man.

i think that this is a hiring to make sure not much gets shaken up on the team.

1) i don't think we're going to be in the draft at least not in the first round. (seeing as though BK technically still has control of the team, i don't think we're going to let go of any more future picks or current players). we might be able to get a second round pick for cash but that's it.

2) with grant, i think both joshes are going to be resigned. i doubt he wants his first big move to be losing one of them in free agency and i don't think we're going to get a decent SnT for either of them.

3) woodson's staying. ASG probably told him that he's going to have to get a two year extension and needs to get a GM who is still on board.

This hire will be met with a resounding......blah.

I like the fact he's young, don't like the fact that he's trained under some of the worst gm's I can think of. At least he's not Billy King. I basically don't trust these guys (ASG) to do anything competent at this point.

I was willing to give the ASG the benefit of the doubt and hope that they meddled more because BK was so incompetent that I wouldn't have given him free reign either. But honestly this guys biggest asset appears to be that the owners are most familiar with him and thats a really terrible sign.

At least he's not a retread, recycled failed gm somewhere else. I'm trying to look at the bright side of things, although my instincts continue to tell me these a**holes will hire someone they're "comfortable" with (read: someone they can control).

When will this court case be over? Is there a still a chance Belkin can take this franchise away from these failures?

Hawks Narrow GM Search

The Atlanta Hawks, according to NBA front-office sources, have narrowed their search for a new general manager to a single contender.

Sources told ESPN.com on Friday that Cleveland Cavaliers assistant general manager Chris Grant -- who worked under Pete Babcock and Billy Knight in the Hawks' front office before moving to Cleveland -- is the only candidate Atlanta is presently speaking with as it seeks to replace Knight.

Contract negotiations between Grant and the Hawks began this week, sources said, after San Antonio Spurs assistant GM Dennis Lindsey withdrew his name from consideration Monday. It's apparently up to Grant, at this point, whether he wants to make the leap from one of the most stable franchises in the Eastern Conference to a team that just halted the league's longest playoff drought (eight seasons) and is known for feuding factions in its crowded ownership group.

I think the hawks owners just wanted to hire someone to be their lady, thats why they got a former ball boy.

Sad.

I'm sure the ASG group will mention how far he's came.

I don't think he's going to be a bad hire but I'm just worried that the ASG is going to meddle and keep Grant from doing his job.

Now, what does this guy bring that gives us hope? Was he part of the WIlliams' picks? I would hope he left before then.

We are going to see more of the same going forward as this group of owners still doesn't get it. They want to do it with home-grown talent, when the home-grown talent has not proven to be successful at this level.

The fan's opinion doesnt' matter with this group. That has been proven time and time again. Give me 100 people who believe that Woody and BK did an adequate job in their tenure.

NOw we have another link to the inconsistencies of this franchise. More of the same until proven otherwise. Past history does not bode well for this franchise.

Rush out to get your season tickets.
