Offseason Plan - Trade(s) and Draft
I was disappointed in getting the 4th pick in the draft (hoping we could have had a chance at Rose). That being said, I started thinking how we might shape the SEATTLE Supersonics.
First move (get rid of Clay)...
Ok, fine, basketball moves:
#1 - S&T With Charlotte
Deal the #4 pick, Wilcox, and Ridnour or Watson to Charlotte for Okafor, the #9 pick, and a 2009 1st Round pick.
Why Charlotte - A starting rotation of Felton, Richardson, Wallace, Wilcox, plus a center would be one of the most athletic and fast paced teams.
Why Seattle - Okafor can be the strong interior force we are missing.
#9 - Russell Westbrook
#24 - Kyle Weaver
#32 - Joey Dorsey
#46 - Richard Hendrix
#50 - Shan Foster
Westbrook and Weaver would greatly improve our defense at the guard positions.

Ok, hang on. Jes has a legit idea going here. Looking to get a quality center. Yep. That's the holy grail.
- E Okafor. Yep. That's would do it. RFA, & the Bobcats are notoriously cheap.
- A Biedrins would be another. Also a restricted free agent. Warriors love him.
- K Love would be great in the middle. Bet Memphis takes him #5 pick.
Any other centers that would work for Seattle?
You got some pieces to work with... C Wilcox, the 2008 #24, expirings (A Griffin & D Marshell), the Sonics 2009 1st (top 10 protected please), the Spurs 2009 1st & a decent developing young big in J Petro.
What can you come up with? Better yet, what could Presti do?

I have to respectfully disagree with you about Kevin Love DJ.
I know the kid is skilled but he has no hops at all. He is way closer to 6'8" than 6'10" doesn't really have any length.
I just don't see the kid being better than a mediocre back up, if that, at the next level.

1) That Charlotte deal wouldn't be possible, because free agency starts at the beginning of July, while the draft is in June.
So the only thing we could do, if we'd go for Okafor, is to do a sign and trade that includes a guy like Wilcox and future picks(starting next year) and see if they're interested or not.
Though, with Larry Brown around, i really doubt that Okafor will be available.
2) There will be better guys available at #24 and #32 then Kyle Weaver(mid 2nd rounder) and Joey Dorsey(mid 2nd rounder as well).

1) What tells you that the Bobcats are cheap?
They came into the league 4 years ago and had a limited salary cap, like every other expansion franchise as well.
Last summer was the first they had the full salary to work with and they added the huge contract of Jason Richardson. They also extended Gerald Wallace for 6 years and nearly $57 mil.
The only reason Okafor hasn't been extended was because of the demands he made, which weren't close to what he's producing on the court.
Though, i still expect them to re-sign him to something like 10 - 12 mil a year over the next 3 - 6 years.
2) Biedrins would be really nice on our team, but it all depends on what happens with the Warriors. If Davis goes, then he and Ellis surely will be re-signed. If Davis stays, then i've got my doubts that they'll be able to re-sign both of these guys. With us being about 5 - 7 mil under the cap(our rookies will add about 5 mil to our salary), i don't think it would be a problem for them to match for Biedrins. That's why the only way we could get him would be to do a sign and trade, which would be hard to do, as i doubt that the Warriors like what we would offer them.
3) Kevin Love, no thanks. But we've been through this before...

We won't have any of this years picks to work with, as free agency starts after the draft and you can't really use them in those trades.
Those other parts are nice, but i doubt that the Bobcats or Warriors would like them enough to part ways with either Okafor or Biedrins.
That's why i still think that a rookie like Robin Lopez(yeah, i know you like him

You're right. Shouldn't have called them cheap. What I really meant is that E Okafor & the Bobcats have already had one failure at signing a new contract. So maybe there's a chance. Probably not. Bobcats have loads of cap space. And E Okafor is good. Mostly just wishful thinking.

I think you're right on this one too. But do you think the Warriors will let him just walk? Or would it be a sign/trade deal? Who could afford him otherwise?

This is it. The contest is on. It's Robin Lopez versus Kevin Love. Who's going to have the better rookie year! Place your bets!

I'm not saying that R Lopez will put up better numbers then Love.
All i'm saying is that i don't see Love fitting in with us and that i'm not sure how or if his game translates into the pros.
Given the right situation Love could end up averaging something like 12 and 7 during his first year, but we already got Nick Collison to do something like this and we need a guy that plays defense, grabs rebounds and is a guy that opponents have to respect, because he's a threat to block their shots.
Even if Love would play for us, the other team would, just like those last 3 years, drive to the basket without any fear of getting their shots blocked, cause he's just not tall/athletic enough to block and change the other teams shots.

I agree, first of all we've all seen the videos of Love improving himself and Collision for his selection is kind of a bust, but he is constant and gives you 9 and 9 every night sometimes much more and can run with anyone, the starters or the second unit. Just a good dependable player and yes I hope they get a good pg (Rose, Bayless or Mayo) and Love.

The Sonics are building an uptempo team. That is why I don't like Kevin Love. He is rooted to the floor, and slow up and down the court.
Lopez I like. He has alot of the same skills as Tim Duncan. There are so many good players in this draft I am not completely sold on him at #4. We cannot afford to miss on so high a pick. I would prefer OJ Mayo only because I am convinced Mayo will be a star in the NBA. Lopez still needs some development but good centers don't come along that often.

Hard to argue but not impossible!

Sonics could have selected David West. But I do like Collisons heart.
Tell me this would you pay to watch Kevin Love at the YMCA? I wouldn't.

i am not advocating the selection of love, rather i am defending the selection of collison. how can he be called a bust? the guy shows up every night, does the dirty work, plays with energy, plays the game the "right way" and never rocks the boat. he averages close to a double double in under 30 minutes per and every now and then goes off for 20/20. how is that a bust? he was the 12th pick in the draft. you can say we could have had this guy or that guy, but give me a break, you just dont know for sure what you are getting in the mid first round. he has been solid, and every team could use a guy like him.
i think love will be solid as well. he wont wow anyone as an athelete, but he has a high basketball IQ and is skilled. Would i take him 4th? no i would not. but if the sonics trade down from the 4th or up from the 24th and love was available in the 10 to 14 range, i would not mind them taking him there. but i seriously doubt that he makes it past the 9th spot.

For the record I think David West is overrated. And you're right, Collison was good value for the 12th pick. If we took Collison at the 4th pick I'd be scratching my head. And actually now that I think about it I was just mad that draft because we took Ridnour AND Collison who both had games I didn't like in college.

Please no Kevin Love...
Word is (according to ESPN) the Heat are very high on Mayo... It might not take much to trade up from the 4. I think it'd be worth for trading up for whoever is left between Rose/Beasley for the second pick. It would be nice if we could have our pick determined for us for the second straight year.
