Kobe wore #33 in High School which was obviously unavailable with the Lakers. Kobe was drafted before the Lakers gave away George Lynch & Anthony Peeler to the Grizzlies (to make room for Shaq) which is why 24 wasn't available (Lynch's #) . He settled on #8 (I read in SLAM that he thought of 8 because if you turn the 2 3's in 33 around and put them together it's an 8 and also because of D'Antoni) After Lynch was traded he could have switched to 24 but the #8 jersey, t-shirts, etc. had already saturated the market.

Also interesting that when the Lakers picked up Jim Jackson late in the season the year before Kobe's # switch they let Jackson wear #24. The rule had already been changed that a player must file for a # change a year in advance, so the Lakers must have known right off the bat they wouldn't have Jackson back for a 2nd season.

Malone wore #11 with the Lakers as it was his # on the Olympic team. Originally he said he planned to wear #12 to honor John Stockton, dont know why he switched.

Also funny, when the Shaq/Lamar Odom deal went down Odom originally chose #5 as 7 was taken by Brian Cook. When Odom and Cook got together Odom offered him some compensation for the # and Cook gave up #7. He then actually requested #34 from the Lakers, which was denied so he wore 43. Imagine the extra drama had the team given Cook Shaq's jersey number just two weeks after the trade.

Rodman wore #73 with the Lakers because of some combination of his rebounding titles, it was kinda confusing. I remember reading it in SI. He originally requested #69 which Jerry Buss refused. In an episode of The Dennis Rodman reality show he can be seen with the #69 jersey they had originally given him.

More recently I can think of a couple just from trades.... Igoudala in Philly switching from #4 to #9 for Chris Webber and Jefferson switching from #8 to #7 in Boston for Antoine Walker.

Glen Davis chose number 11 because the vertical lines have a slimming effect.

Shawn Bradley took 76 as a Sixer because he was 7'6".

Desagana Diop wore 52 as a rookie because his mom was born in 1952.

Kobe wore 8 in college because he had number 143 in basketball camp, thus 1+4+3=8. His fav number was and is 24.

Kobe wore 8 at what college again?

KOBE CHANGED HIS # TO BE MORE MARKETABLE

After a decline in jersey sales and a troubled past and very few endorsemnet deals signed after 2004 he wanted to show his value.

It worked and the hate for #8 subsided. Now #24 is the MVP. Good thinking by his agent or whomever.

It was a cool combo of 24 / 7 w/ LO but they didnt push it like they should have.

Kevin Durant wears the #35 in honor of his childhood coach who died at the age of 35.

If you go to the link it has a little video clip about it.

Chris Paul wears 3 because his dad was 1 and his older brother was 2.
CP1, CP2, CP3. they all had the same initials. Even their middle name, E.

Nope he always looked up to.... you guessed it... Jerry Stackhouse who went to North Carolina. That's the really story behind Kobe wearing 24. If you take Stackhouse's jersey number, 42, and switch the numbers around what do you get?

No,once again you are wrong. As said earlier, Kobe switched to 24 because of marketability issues and its his old HS #. NOT JERRY STACKHOUSE.

Michael Redd wears 22 to signify how many shots he strives to take a game.
