Jordan in Video Games

Post#1 » by thebossman » Sun May 25, 2008 8:07 pm

I was just wondering how come M.J wasnt in any video games. Was it a contractual issue? I remember as a little kid I thought it was because he was to good, hahahah...

The only game I had with him was Jordan vs. Bird on NINTENDO the first real DUNK CONTEST and 3pt Shoot Out Game.

Original Nintendo FTW (and SNES)

yeah I always thought the same thing but I think its because he made his name a brand.... "Jordan". I think to use his name the company would have to pay a certain amount, that most did not want to pay.

I think he is also on one of my favorite games... "Charles Barkley's: Shut Up and Jam"

I don't think that's it because Shaq, Vince and LeBron each have their own name as a brand. And I'm not talking just shoes, I've seen shirts and wristbands with LeBron and Vince Carters name on them.

I think it's really stupid on Michaels part to not let himself in video games.

BTW, same thing happens in MLB games with Barry Bonds.

It has to be contractual issues. No NBA game maker is going to leave out the most popular and arguably greatest basketball player of all-time unless there's legal issues in the way.

I believe Shaq and Barkley have also been missing from some NBA video games. In fact, wasn't Barkley missing from NBA Jam: Tournament Edition, which is what helped spawn the generic copycat "Barkley Shut Up And Jam!"?

Lebron, Carter and Shaq aren't their own brand, Nike just markets through them. The rights of those guys belong the NBA and basically, whatever outside contract pays them the most, in Lebrons terms, his nike contract.

Jordan is his own brand and he bought the rights to his name. Like for example, lets say your name is Adam James or something. You can buy the right to the name Adam James and whenever it gets published, they have to pay you. It costs a ton of money to do, but Jordan wanted to own himself I guess. And I heard to use Jordan in a video game, you have to pay him like 2 million dollars or something like that.

I think in Nba 2k3 had jordan on the Wizards.

Id love to see jordan on the cover of a new game. I might buy it just to play as Jordan. Ive hated the last couple of NBA 2k games.

I always hated that Jordan was not in any of the 90's NBA Live games. Even when I made him (all 99's in every category) he still only averaged 15 ppg.

Who needs Michael Jordan when you have "SG #84"?

I remember the original NBA In The Zone for the first Playstation.

The Bulls, instead of Jordan, had "Player" (who was #23 of course).

Shaq also had some contractual issues and wasn't in the game. But the Orlando Magic, instead of having some equivalent stand-in, had Tree Rollins starting at center.

He wasn't originally on the games when he played for the Bulls, but am I the only one who remembers the thing where you could type his name into Create-A-Player, and the game would automatically create him? Like, they already had him in the system, just they couldn't officially put him on of course.

I always thought it was because Michael Jordan didn't register with the NBAPA or something...
