Dunking: Dr. J vs Darryl Dawkins

Post#1 » by Point forward » Tue May 27, 2008 9:50 pm

Two of the most ferocious dunkers in NBA history, and both Sixers, and to top it all, both were team mates for a period of time. If you think about "Sixers GOAT dunker", do you think of Doc or Darryl first?

DOC
Best dunks ever: the FT line dunk and the rock a baby over Coop. See Doc flying through the air like Superman-with-an-Afro in 1976 and utterly destroying a bona fide DPOY, Michael Cooper, in 1982.

DARRYL

The "Chocolate Thunder Flying, Glass Flying, Robinzine Crying, Babies Crying, Glass Still Flying, Catch Crap, Rump Roasting, Bun Toasting, Thank You, Wham, Bam, I Am Jam." See Dawkins unleash a hailstorm of broken glass onto the heads of Bill Robinzine and later Bobby Jones.

As Dawkins was one one my guilty treat players, I take him. Gotta love those shattered backboards. And you?

PS I thought about putting this into the PC board, but I thought this was more appropriate. :D

Doc. His dunks were usually accompanied with jaw dropping moves like the one over Cooper. He also threw them down all the time over great shot blockers. Doc would posterize guys all the time. :D

Dawkins was exciting to watch but more of a power dunker like Shaq.

How is this even a comparison. Dr. J is one of the greatest dunkers in NBA history while Dawkins is a guy who tore down rims and named his dunks. No comparison whatsoever.

Although Doc could certainly dunk with power, I think you have to put him in the acrobatic dunker category with Dawkins in the power dunker category. Really very different animals, hence why pre-Dwight Howard you did not see big power dunkers in or winning the dunk contest. On a power dunking comparison I would place Dawkins second as a Sixer behind the younger version of Charles Barkley. Sir Charles had some of the best power rebound dunks I have ever seen, which unfortunatley eluded DD due to his rebounding allergy.
