Defensive Anchor (Big Man)

Post#1 » by Cruel_Ruin » Sun May 18, 2008 2:46 am

We need one.

We have plenty of good perimeter defenders. There is no reason we can't be a good defensive team. What we lack is a big man help defender to clog the paint, deter slashers, and overall just cause havoc in the paint. Mikki Moore is not the answer. Hawes will never be one. We need a Tyson Chandler-type to clean the glass and patrol the paint.

Getting one is the tricky part. Who is a available? I think our best chance is in the draft. I wouldn't mind packaging our second rounders to take a flyer on this guy. Not NBA ready at this point, but has mind-boggling length and actually some skills on offense.

So, yeah, ideas...

Well, the draft sometime is the most likely source for us

Or, the other scenario, is if we get somebody who's just there to be effective, make us competitive, for some amount of time (not too long though), but then we would/should eventually trade that lesser comptabible big man (like Love would be, for example) for a guy who is the opposite.

Emeka Okafor would be fantastic, but not realistic.

Sooner, or later, this team is going to have to get a quality defensive big man in the starting line-up. Combined with Hawes who won't be a slouch defensively, will make for a significant defensive foundation up front.

Love is a pretty good defensive player. Excellent rebounder, good shotblocker but he doesnt look the part. I dont get how you guys want these guys who can jump out the gym and have the "look" but are more potential than substance. Love produces and he would make the Kings much better than Arthur, Speights or Jordan.

James Gist and Othello Hunter fit the mold of late 2nd picks who could blossom. Both come from solid programs and played top tier competition. Ryan Anderson is a good player but will probably struggle defensively.

    I watched Love play atleast 10-15 times and he is NOT a good defensive player. He's an okay post defender because of his weight and he plays solid post defense, but he's way too slow laterally. He sucks at blocking shots. There's a reason KU won the championship and beat Memphis while UCLA didn't come close, KU PLAYED DEFENSE. UCLA's frontline was a short guy who is really a SF(strong for a SF though) and a slow guy who can't move quickly.

Arthur's potenital and substance. Was also on two very deep Kansas teams so it limited him to an extent, and also foul trouble limited him at times. I've watched the guy with regularity since January 2007.

Not that into Speights.

I wouldn't mind taking a chance on Jordan.

-------------

Love isn't going anything above-average in the NBA defensively, and regardless of how effective he is as a rebounder - you have to play effective initial defense first. Love will be limited as a defender.

I don't know how good of a rebounder he'll be in the NBA, and don't think it'll matter because of his defensive ability being at such a ceiling.

Bottom line is, Love won't be the kind of defender that's relied on highly on an NBA team. Defense won't be a strength for him.

So you should see a guy that is not very bright, inconsistent and regularly got into foul trouble.

A guy who was outplayed by Love who had seven blocks in the A & M game.

I agree that he wont be a great defender but he can be a good defender. I do think he will be an excellent rebounder due to his size, fundamentals and instincts. He will be a great rotational player.

I thought KU won the game against Memphis cause Memphis choked down the stretch (as feared throughout the year), Arthur (great game, not so much in previous tourney games) and the KU guards played a great game and Memphis lived and died by the 3.

If I am the Kings, I go and get Roy Hibbert. Yes, his upside is limited but he is a very good defensive player who can serve as an anchor.

Sure if he's available at #42 I snatch him up, no way in hell do I touch him with the #12 pick.
