Blowing up the Mavs

Post#1 » by The Penguin » Sat May 31, 2008 5:10 pm

I want to start by saying that I think your team is still capable of a title run, but I was bored and wondered what the board thought of this Maverick rebuilding plan (3 seperate deals):

Deal 1:
Mavs get: #2 pick, Wally S., Eric Snow, Damon Jones
Cavs get: J. Terry, U. Haslem, M. Blount
Heat get: Dirk

Deal 2:
Mavs get:#13, R. Lafrentz, M. Webster, J. Jack
Blazers get: J. Howard, E. Dampier

Deal 3:
Mavs get: #6, S. Marbury, M. Allen
Knicks get: J. Kidd, J. Stackhouse

These deals leave the Mavs with just the #2,#6 & #13 under contract after next year. The Mavs would probably be real bad next year, but I'm under the impression they didn't deal next years #1 in the Kidd trade because of the rules about trading consecutive picks. Basicly, they could have something like Beasley, Mayo & D. Jordan, along with a high lottery pick next year and unlimited cap room to make a run at premier F/A's like Lebron, Wade, Melo or Bosh in upcoming summers.

I'm definitley not down with the first trade, the third trade isn't much better but I would have to think about that second trade. However most people I have noticed around here are not to crazy about truly blowing up or trying to rebuild. It's like they expect the Mavs to luck into a trade like the Lakers did with Gasol. Personally I dont give Dirk up but anyone else I'm listening.

Well, if Cuban has no good trades or steals available this off season, i'm down with all of them. But only the first one has a good probability.

Not sure if PDX is going to take on Damp with Oden and Prizbilla already at C, Kicks giving up their #6 for Kidd?

Absolutely hate the 1st and 3rd trades... I would think about the 2nd trade because we finally get some youth/talent though.

I'm not in agreeance here.

Josh Howard and Dampier for Webster, #13, an expiring and a role player I hope to god they don't resign? If we could get more value by keeping Damp and letting Portland keep Lafrentz, I'd do that.

#13 + Rudy Fernandez + Webster + filler (if needed) for Howard + Wright or our 2nd

The NY trade is fine #6 + Marbury + Rose? (M. Allen is a Dallas UFA) for Stack & Kidd

Trade 1 needs to eliminate the Cavs all together. Dirk + Terry for #2 + Marion + Blount

^ Uhh, what?

Trade Dirk+JET for Marion+#2+Blount?

I mean it's a great trade for us, but it really doesn't make much sense for the Heat. They still need a PG, they'd have Haslem as a bench player, they give up the #2 overall pick?

The Heat would have a hard time doing Marion for Dirk straight up, Marion's versatility is what makes it a dealbreaker.

THEN Jet for #2 and Blount? Even if you wanted to toss it around and make it Marion+Blount for Dirk, #2 for JET doesn't make sense. The Heat are fine where they are at, unfortunately. I'd rather just stay away from them.

As a Mavs fan, I'd be happy with all 3 deals for the reasons that you mention if they were realistic.

4 lotto picks between this season and next, and having nearly 40M of cap space to sign FAs in 09 would be a great start to our rebuilding process.

Of all the teams involved though, Cleveland would be the only one to pull the trigger.

Cuban should be licking his chops at those deals but will continue to beat the dying horse of winning a championship with Dirk.

I like all these for the Mavs, but I think only the first trade would go through. NY has no reason to do the last trade.

Yeah, I don't think the Knicks would do that deal either, unless Dantoni decides that he is just a pg away from contending in the East, but you never know what the Knicks would do.

I only think Miami would do the deal if they had no shot at Rose and decided Beasley had too many question marks. Dirk, Marion & healthy Wade are a better core to chase a title than Wade & 2 years ago Shaq...KG, Pierce & Allen have the Celts in the Finals and the Heat would have a better long term trio than those 3.

The Portland deal would give them a borderline all star & a backup big man for rotation players & a late lotto pick....but it would take them out of potential free agency.

Portland is looking for a PG (not Terry). So they will not throw in Rudy to a deal they do not want.
