Ford or Hinrich for YOUR team
TJ Ford and Kirk Hinrich. Two very different PGs both potentially on the move this year. Which one would your team be more likely to try to acquire given your personnel needs and including their contract situation, etc.
For Washington, if we went for either, it would be Hinrich to take Daniels's place as the third guard who can play with Arenas though for us to take on his contract, Chicago would have to take back one of our expendable big contracts since we are very close to the luxury tax and Hinrich isn't the kind of player worth going over it for.

Hinrich is the much safer pick for most teams. I can't really answer this properly because I'm from Toronto, and TJ is already on the team. This is how I would compare them though.
Hinrich is the better defender, and he's a much better shooter. Far more fundamentally sound. He's got the size advantage and he's stronger.
TJ is much quicker, and a far better play maker. He's a better ball handler. He can break down his man much better than Hinrich with his speed and ball handling skills. TJ is fragile and injury prone though.
Having said that he is very tough. He's bounced back from two serious injuries already, and he plays with a lot of pride and heart. TJ can be frustrating at times to watch though. He occasionally plays out of his realm and tries to dominate games, which is very hard to swallow considering he usually doesn't take them over.

Take away the injury concerns, and I'll take Ford all day long.
He's a much better play-maker than Hinrich. His jump-shot has improved by leaps and bounds [he's eFG% on jump-shots this season is 46.7%, ironically, Hinrich is shooting a lower eFG% than Ford, at 45%] and attacks the basket very well.
Ford also creates his shot far better than Hinrich [42% of Kirk's shots are assisted, compared to 17% of TJ's shots] and can create shots for others better than Kirk can too. TJ is also younger, and IMO has yet to reach his potential.
Defensively, TJ doesn't have the size, and his defense has indeed slipped since he got injured this season, but to be fair, Kirk's defense has also slipped this season. TJ has shown that he can use his quickness on defense, unlike Hinrich, but Hinrich does have the size and mentality advantage.
Defense and 3-ball range are the only real advantages Hinrich has, while TJ is better at nearly every other faccet of the game. IMO, Ford would flourish in a faster paced offense with some athletes, or a system with a big man down low and shooters surrounding him [PHX, NY with D'antoni, Orlando, GSW, Indiana, Atlanta, Philly and Charlotte].

playmaking isn't what alot of teams need from the PG spot though. On a taem like Miami where they have Wade, who cares what percentage of Hinrichs shots are assisted or not? Wade will create open shots for Hinrich. Same with a team like the Lakers, Rockets, Spurs, Celtics, etc. etc.T-Spot wrote:Take away the injury concerns, and I'll take Ford all day long.

Alot of teams just need their PG to get their team into the offense, not create. Obviously there are exceptions (Jazz, Suns, Hornets)

Hinrich would be our two, and he would be wonderful at what we need (defense and 3 pt shooting). Another ball handler in the starting line up is also a luxury, and he can also play big minutes with Paul or Pargo.

Basically with the response we've had in here, if you already have a ball dominant guard (Wade, Paul, Arenas, McGrady), you go with Hinirch because he's a better complementary piece to your star with his off the ball shooting and good defense is just a plus.
If you need a guard who can break down the defense and give you constant penetration and great playmaking ability, you go Ford.
Not much of a surprise that teams with star guards would rather have a guy who doesn't need the ball in his hands to be effective!
In the right system, T.J could do so much more for you than Hinrich.

Yea, I'd rather TJ if I was starting fresh, and honestly, I really like Calderon but I'm not sure he is a more valuable player than TJ when healthy. Calderon is a nice guy who can shoot and really get the ball in the correct spots, but I feel like TJ can make something out of nothing and break down a D much better... just a more dynamic player.
I see the guys on the raps board fighting about it, but I'm pretty torn on it myself, but I just went way off topic
I don't think a lot of people realize how talented of a playmaker TJ is, he has wonderful vision, and passing ability, and the speed/quickness and ball handling to fully utilize it.

Ford all day. Hinrich is really overrated right now seeing that this year he flat out SUCKED. He didn't defend well or shoot well, so the reasons you guys would take him would be thrown out the window. TJ on the other hand is a great play maker, passer, is quick, and create for himself and others. Hinrich can't create for himself or others.

Ford's ok but definitely Hinrich for PHX
You might need a replacement for Bell pretty soon as well. Ford is a much better fit in the Suns current system that relies on a penetrating, playmaking guard who excels in a fast paced style. Why do you think Colangelo went out and acquired Ford after he left Phoenix? He wanted to create a similar style in Toronto around T.J. The only thing Hinirich has in common with Nash is his outside shooting, but no where near as efficient. After a Warriors/Raptors game this past season, Don Nelson said this about T.J, "He's as close to Nash as anyone I've seen." Pretty high praise from a guy who coached Nash for a good part of his career in Dallas.
