about the matches i saw on saturday, the refs of 3 fights (2 with the same one) were kind of bad.

in one, the boxer looked like he was going down but his gloves never hit the ground, he bounced back thanks to the ropes, but the ref gave him the count.

in the other 2, the last 2 fights, the ref stopped the fight and gave TKO when the fighters were on their way to the ground, in both occassions the fighters were angry.

personally i think he should have left them fall and then give them the count. but i also think it was a "good" move to protect them.

Here is the recap via ESPN

Saturday at Chetumal, Mexico
Featherweight
Oscar Larios TKO5 Feider Viloria
Wins a vacant interim featherweight title
Records: Larios, 61-6-1, 38 KOs; Viloria, 21-3-1, 15 KOs

Rafael's remark: What a sham of a so-called title match, interim or otherwise. Jorge Linares, the outstanding 22-year-old titleholder from Venezuela, was supposed to defend against Colombia's Viloria until withdrawing on short notice because of a shoulder injury. So the WBC wrongly approved Larios to face Viloria for the interim belt. Larios, of course, was brutally destroyed in a 10th-round TKO by Linares in July 2007. The fight left Larios, 31, hospitalized with bleeding on his brain and a permanent suspension in Nevada, meaning he would have a very difficult time ever getting a license anywhere in the United States. But Mexico doesn't care and it licensed Larios, who returned in February to win a decision against a nothing opponent. Now, in his second fight back, Larios was handed a title match, which he won when the bout was stopped during a sudden flurry in the fifth round. Because of the WBC's abysmal open scoring system, scores were revealed after the fourth round; the fight was a split draw going into the fifth. Viloria, who protested the stoppage, has lost two of three and never deserved a title match either. Here's the sick part: Linares is going to have to fight Larios again in a mandatory bout upon his return to action. He'll smoke Larios again. Let's hope he doesn't wind up with another brain bleed, or worse.

Featherweight
Guty Espadas Jr. TKO2 Naoki Matsuda
Title eliminator
Records: Espadas Jr., 42-7, 27 KOs; Matsuda, 28-8-3, 11 KOs

Rafael's remark: This fight boiled down to two punches, both right hands from Espadas, the 33-year-old Mexican who held a featherweight belt from 2000 to 2001 before losing it on points to Erik Morales. Espadas knocked Japan's Matsuda, 31, on his butt with a right hand in the first round and dropped him to his rear end with a much heavier right in the second round. Matsuda got up quickly and seemed to be just fine as he responded to referee Jose Cobian's instructions. Cobian, however, inexplicably stopped the fight in what looked like a terribly premature stoppage. After Espadas was knocked out by Rocky Juarez in the second round in December 2004, he didn't fight again until March 2007. Now, he is 4-0 on his comeback and, with this victory, in line to challenge Jorge Linares for a title. Espadas' win is a mild upset. Matsuda was coming off a no contest (although he deserved a victory) against former titlist Rodolfo Lopez, whom he also owns a win against.

Honestly when Nevada( the land of hookers and gambling) doesn't license you to fight... you should quit.

Even worse... they have open scoring. I would hate to go to a fight with opening scoring. I don't understand why the WBC has it. It kills any element of surprise if the fight goes the distance

why was linares suspended and had his license revoked? so he wouldn't get more hits to the head? as a prevention method?

He(Linares) wasn't suspended,he pulled out due to injury... He hurt his shoulder during training.

I suppose in the wisdom of the WBC, they got Larios as a replacement( and got it ok for him to fight) and made the fight for an interim title instead. There is always that provision that the card is subject to change when someone gets hurt.

Rasho has it highlighted in his post. Larios had bleeding in the brain after the Linares fight. You know what's sad is that Larios now become Linares mandatory. That fight should not happen period from a safety point of view.

so, my question is, when you get brain bleed the license is revoked to prevent you to get even more injured?

more injury = death with brain bleed, it's pretty serious. You just don't want to risk it.

Oh ok quick prediction time

Pavlik with a killer KO in the 4th
Deleon/Lopez steals the show and DeLeon gets a one punch KO in the 8th
Forrest just decimates Mora forcing a stoppage late
Quintana gets a UD vs Williams. His style confuses Williams.

Well according to boxing scene Floyd Mayweather Jr has decided to retire from boxing.

Dear Media:
It is with a heavy heart that I write you this message today. I have decided to permanently retire from boxing. This decision was not an easy one for me to make as boxing is all I have done since I was a child. However, these past few years have been extremely difficult for me to find the desire and joy to continue in the sport.
I have said numerous times and after several of my fights over the past two years that I might not fight again. At the same time, I loved competing and winning and also wanted to continue my career for the fans, knowing they were there for me and enjoyed watching me fight. However, after many sleepless nights and intense soul-searching I realized I could no longer base my decision on anything but my own personal happiness, which I no longer could find. So I have finally made up my mind, spoken to my family, particularly my mother, and made my decision.
I am sorry I have to leave the sport at this time, knowing I still have my God-given abilities to succeed and future multi-million dollar paydays ahead, including the one right around the corner. But there comes a time when money doesn't matter. I just can't do it anymore. I have found a peace with my decision that I have not felt in a long time.
Finally, I want to personally thank all of my fans for their loyalty and dedication as my career comes to a close. I always believed that their enthusiasm and support helped carry me to victory with every fight I ever had.
It was a great joy to have fought for all of you. Now I hope you understand my decision and wish me well with the rest of my life.
Floyd Mayweather Jr.

I was looking forward to him taking on Oscar again. Sad day for me! I hope he decides to come back during the near future.

Paul Williams is the man right now, like to see him Cotto or De La Hoya. Pavlik dominated, should fight whoever is better between Abraham and Sturm then Calzaghe.

Williams really redeemed himself and is a matchup nightmare for everyone at 147. I wouldn't surprise me if he is taller than Pavlik.

I see Oscar getting the winner of Cotto/Margrito...

Williams will have to really search for fights... Mosley?
