Where would KG rank alltime with a Finals MVP and title

Post#1 » by JordansBulls » Tue Jun 3, 2008 1:28 pm

Where would KG rank alltime with a Finals MVP and title if he gets those this year.

Would he have surpassed Barkley or Karl Malone?

If the Celtics win it this season than I'd imagine KG would be considered around the Malone/Barkley level. If they win 2 during this period, he jumps them and gets in the top 12 talk.

Would he surpass Kobe since he did it as his team's best player? (flame on!)

Haha, I was wondering this. We have talk about Kobe being put in the same catergory as Magic if he wins one this season but if KG wins the finals MVP hasn't he accomplished more in his career?

No because if PP wins it, he wouldn't surpass Kobe.

And I already think that KG is passed Malone/Barkley. The only thing really holding KG back from being near Duncan is a few rings.

Well Pierce is different, he doesn't have historical stat lines, or individual accolades like Garnett does.

Somewhere in the teens IMO.

I don't see why KG wouldn't be in the argument vs. Kobe if he wins this..he has the same number of MVP's..he has a DPOY..he has a good number of all-NBA teams on both sides of the ball..he's never had the supporting cast to compete for the titles, but if he won this year, it means he would actually have to defeat a team led by Kobe in the finals..

he's been considered a top 5 player in most of his years..probably top 3 from 2000 until 2004, including #1 in 2004 IMO..

I know, I'm just trying to show how the Finals MVP award needs to be taken with a grain of salt, because while KG is clearly the best player on his team, Paul Pierce could easily win it if he has a good series.

No need arguing this though. Kobe is a cold blooded killer, and I expect no choking from him. He WILL be the Finals MVP.

I dont know about all of that. If a guy who wasn't even a star or had never even made an allstar team in Billups took home the finals MVP over a team that was heavily favored then you can't say that Kobe wins the finals MVP this year against a team that is better on paper.

I would say Garnett jumps into at least the Top 25, maybe the Top 20. I would have to give it more thought.

Are moderators allowed to bait? I thought you guys were suppose to set examples for us; I am so confused now.

I think Kg would pass Malone and Barkley with the ring.

Do you have an answer as to why KG wouldn't be considered greater than Kobe if he won the Finals MVP?

He'd have as many MVPs but more DPOYs and Finals MVPs.

The main answer of course is one ring (though as the main man) v. three (though arguably as the sidekick). But I think it's a legit argument either way IF Boston wins the title (even if Garnett isn't Finals MVP).

Isn't KG a sidekick to Pierce?

If Pierce wins Finals MVP (no one else except those two will be in the discussion if Boston wins IMO), wouldn't that make KGs championship no more than one of those Kobe has 3 of already (not being named Finals MVP)?

^^I don't think so, just like it doesn't make Duncan the sidekick because of Parker's Finals MVP.

It's clear who the Celtics best player has been throughout the season and the postseason, the guy who was 3rd in MVP voting, and the DPOY.

As an aside, how many guys have both an MVP and a DPOY? How many have MVP, DPOY, and Finals MVP?? I imagine it's a small list.

Yeah its a small list because as we all know nobody won the DPOY award before the 80s (becasue nobody could play defense and so nobody won the award).

I honestly wonder how many DPOY and Finals MVPs Russell would have. Ill bet he would have more than 1 MVP,DPOY,Finals MVP in the same yr.

I like KG but how again does he leapfrog the following with a ring?

Pettit
Barkley
K Malone
Pippen
Hondo
Baylor
Mikan
Barry
Mosses Malone
DRob
Isiah
Stockton
