WALTHAM, Mass. -- Boston backup guard Tony Allen is back on the practice court as the Celtics prepare for the NBA Finals against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Coach Doc Rivers said Allen was only supposed to go through the first part of practice on Tuesday, but he was jumping and dunking.

Allen had some success guarding Lakers star Kobe Bryant in the regular season, holding the NBA MVP to 22 points on 6-for-25 shooting.

Allen missed the last two games of the Eastern Conference finals against Detroit after straining his right Achilles tendon in practice. He did not make it through the walkthrough on Monday, when the Celtics returned to practice.

Allen said massages have helped his leg feel better.

That's a great news! We need all the help we can get on Kobe and I think this is the series TA can make his contribution!

That would be good.

He just has to play w/in himself on offense -- i.e., bring the ball up court, give it to somebody, move w/o the ball, then be a black hole (3 pointer or straight drive) if he ever gets it back.

It is simply great news because it gets Scal out of uniform. Good for Tony though.

I was hoping to see Scal in uniform and Cassell out... but you're probably right.

Tony would help out a lot in that he can give Kobe a difficult time defensively and while doing so allow Pierce and Allen to conserve their energy for the offensive end...it would also help avoid the possibility of Pierce of Allen getting in some foul trouble...Tony's depth would be a nice boost if healthy enough to go

Hm...this could be a bigger deal than many think! It's another fresh body to through at Kobe...not like much can stop him from getting his 30, but still!

Yeah, he does have his mental lapses, but he's also shown that he can be a tough defender. Which is what we need against Kobe.

Exactly. Hopefully he takes his Ritalin and can focus on the game more!

This not biting on pump fake stuff is a little easier said then done. <g> That's hardly a huge mental lapse since guys do that all the time..

This is good. I hope he gets completely healthy.

The Celtics don't have another guy that can step in and do exactly what Tony Allen can do defensively. He likely still won't play many minutes, but the few he plays could be critical.

I still don't expect TA to play much if at all. Ray Allen will do a better job on Kobe than expected since he doesn't like Kobe. That will be his extra motivation and has been for about the last 2-3 years everytime he faces Kobe.

We'll see how it plays out, but the one thing I don't like about the Ray match-up defensively is that Kobe can elevate over him too easily - either off the dribble or with his fadeaway. Ray isn't an explosive leaper, so he could play good defense and Kobe could still get his shots. Posey can contest some of those shots a little better. I'd rather not burden Pierce with that assignment - Boston needs his offense in this series.
