Here how the Kobe thing should be viewed.

Is Kobe better than Dirk? I'll say yeah. Kobe is the best player in the game and top 5 all-time player when things are said and done.

Is a lineup of DH/Kobe/Howard/Bass/Damp appealing? Yes. It's slightly better than the Lakers pre-Gasol.

Would Kobe accept a trade to Dallas without Dirk here? No. Why push for a trade to a team that is only a slight upgrade with a big question at the four? He would have vetoed that trade so it's a moot point.

Would I have traded DH and Howard for Kobe? Well yeah. The lineup would be something like Terry/Kobe/Stack/Dirk/Damp with probably some supplemental moves made to bolster the bench.

My biggest beef from all of this comes from the front office's position not to move DH and Josh. Well we have since moved Harris and Howard is more than likely being shopped around. Tell me who would you rather have Kobe and Dirk plus fillers or Kidd, player netted from Josh (Marion, Redd, JO?), and Dirk.

I can't find the link but when the Kobe and KG trade talks were going on, Avery and other front office people continued to say they weren't going to break up a team for one player.

The thought process was that while the duo would be good the product of the whole would be lacking. So again I ask would you rather have Kobe and Dirk plus fillers or Kidd, player netted from Josh (Marion, Redd, JO?), and Dirk.

If Dallas didn't win it all this year with a Dirk and Kobe combo it would have been an inveitablility. You can't tell me some veterans/FA wouldnt want to come play with Kobe and Dirk in Dallas AND have Cuban as their owner.

I would have done it, Kobe for Josh and Devin. I have to admit, i wasnt that sure about it that time, we're an amazing team during reg season.
I think i even proposed a trade at the trade board that had this scenario.

Cuban said numerous times when it comes to trades, all three of them, Mark, Avery and Donnie, have equally veto rights. Now with Avery gone, knowing Cuban would've done it, what did Donnie think at that time?
Btw. i think i posted it a year ago: With Kobe and Dirk on a team, as a fan, this would be as much about winning a championship as enjoying good basketball from your team. That would've been a thing of beauty, i dont need a trophy to have it written on paper, you know?

well, me too.
and thats what I've been saying all along. this team needs a second star BADLY. you wont get far in this leaugue with only one star player. ask kobe pre gasol, ask lebron (well, in the eastern conference you might be able to reach the finals but than the west crushes you). it's no different here. the mavs need to get a second star to dallas. it's not easy I know. maybe it's never going to happen. but the day you get the opportunity you gotta take it.
