I'm not advocating anything, but I do think that your timing of the topic is good. We have gone over extensively the need for a pointguard, but it might be a good time just for a change of pace to talk and explore whatifs about Seattle trying for a couple of big men whether by way of draft, trade, or a combination.

Whatif Presti decides to stick with Watson since he did play well the last quarter of the season? Could he try to get a backup with the #24 pick and move Ridnour, which then opens up the #4 pick for a center or power forward, or trade down for one plus another pick?

What are some options?

I suppose it all boils down to how Love impresses Kevin McHale in his workout. I hope he knocks his socks off. Plus there is the question of Foye and MCants. But there's also the duplication question of Love and Jefferson. Plus, if he thinks Love might still be on the board two or three spots lower does McHale entertain a trade? How does Presti manouver in this, or should he at all?

I read where Mareese Speights is considered the second best "NBA ready" big man behind Beasley. Perhaps this isn't the time to revisit the topic since we put it to bed, but how does Ray Felton and the #9 in exchange for Watson or Ridnour and the #4 sound? Speights has the whole package and might be a very good find as the Sonics center. From what I've read the only thing he's missing is the defence. But he has the ability, he just doesn't seem to work as hard at it. Could that change with the right coaching? Was Speights expected to be the offensive weapon and didn't have to play hard on defence? I know he's a great rebounder so he's got that part down.

If Rose, Beasley and Mayo are gone, then what can Bayless do that Felton can't? Both are score first pointguards and Felton has pretty good assist numbers. What incentive is there for Charlotte unless they are looking at Kevin Love themselves? Does Michael Jordan want a more experienced pointguard like Watson perhaps?

What are the chances Seattle tries to fill both their big man hole and pointguard need on the same day?

Yes, on pure skills, Marreese Speights is one of the best bigs in this years draft. The problem with him is, that he seems to lack the fire to use all his tools to his advantage and that's a huge red flag to me, especially at #4.

I still want Bayless, because he provides guard play, shooting touch and the ability to spread the floor. But I think it is way past worth it, to move some pieces (Wilcox, some future picks that we have extra like the extra 2009 and 2010) we have the pieces to make for a gamble as most want to call it.

I want Bayless and Love, two quality guys to add to your young core.

I can't explain it other than I think the pairing of A Jefferson & K Love is solid for many years to come. On top of that I think McHale, as a former big, instinctively values big > little and also recognizes K Love as the complete package. Especially if he continues to lose some weight. Which I don't believe will be an issue. And I don't think McHale will be doing any manuevering. He gets burned when he does. And he knows it. He'll just make a solid draft pick & be happy about it.

Mareese Speights is not someone I want on the Sonics. He's "NBA ready" with regards to his body & individual skill set only. Fantastic physical skills coupled with attention lapses & questionable motivation result in frustration for all involved. In the extreme case it becomes C Webber. Other examples are D Coleman, K Brown, C Wilcox, etc. I would prefer players who's drive is beyond question. These guys are the ones who are internally compelled to be great. They find ways to succeed no matter what the obstacle. As opposed to guys who always have reasons why they didn't succeed.

That's why I'm not in favor of moving that #4 pick. I think OJ Mayo is compelled. He's got a great chance to become a difference maker in the NBA. Those are the types you need to win. R Felton has had several years now to demonstrate who he is. So far I don't think anyone would say he's a difference maker. While it'd be nice to find L Ridnour a new home, that's not nearly as high a priority as adding a difference maker to the team.

If OJ Mayo is gone at #4, and it could happen, then J Bayless looks like a solid fall back choice. He could be a difference maker too. I'm just not as sure about J Bayless as I am about OJ Mayo.

As for Seattle's chance of filling their center hole this summer I'd say they've two chances. Slim. And none. I don't think A Biedrins or E Okafor will be available for what the Sonics can offer (C Wilcox, J Petro, E Watson & draft picks). Other than those two guys I think it's better to wait, let the young talent (K Durant, J Green, OJ Mayo & B Rush) develop & pray J Petro continues his climb up the learning curve or that R Swift somehow recovers from his injuries. Ya, I'm not holding my breath on that last one. Still, this season will be better than the last & we will add two solid players to the core.

I don't trust those workout numbers. For instance OJ Mayo by the workout numbers jumps 2 inches higher than DRose. Anyone who has watched both, actually believe that? Its more like Rose jumps 4 or 5 inches higher than Mayo.
