The Boston Sports guy is back

After his last few efforts (and subsequent smack down on these boards) I thought he deserved some recognition for a pretty 4th quarter comeback.

Bill Simmons: I'm done with the reverse jinx thing - I spent 2 days crafting that last column and sold it too convincingly, there are some people back home who actually think I'm a Lakers fan now. I had a whole master plan to make up for what I did to the Pats in January but I'm abandoning it. Although I will say that I'm a little wounded that anyone from back home would ever think that I liked the Lakers and not the Celtics. There were some obvious clues in the Friday column that were right there ... I am amazed that anyone would think I would just blindly write that the Lakers are completely unbeatable when their backup big man for the 4-5 spots is Ronnie freaking Turiaf. Anyway, I'm done with the reverse jinxing. If the Celtics lose, don't blame me.

This is a fantastic article, one of Simmons's best articles.
GOLD!
Myth: It's the NBA's best and longest rivalry.
Truth: Boston beat L.A. for the title eight straight times before falling in 1985. If that's a long-standing rivalry, so is Tom vs. Jerry, Andy vs. The Sistas and hammer vs. nail. Isn't it more of a "recent rivalry that was once a relentless butt-whupping"?

Yaaawn...Okay, so all the disparaging remarks he's made about Paul Pierce, Doc Rivers, Danny and even the owners over the years were what, tough love via reverse psychology?
Bill Simmons is a sellout. Even worse, he's a fickin' Lakers fan, sucking Kobe's dick vicariously through Ric Bucher of all douchebags. Sad...

If you read it carefully you will notice the love is for the 80's Celtics team. He loves that team - I believe that. But he has never been on board for THIS team.
Where is the love for PP HUGE game vs. Lebron? That's pretty epic right there. You would think he would come up with all kinds of pop culture references for it. That's his "stick" after all but nothing..
For whatever reason the guy just didn't get swept up at all in this teams run. Some pin it on LA - but I don't buy it. It's an ego thing. After all those disparaging comments he doesn't want to admit he was wrong.

Dan Shaughnessy, Jr. is what he's become. Whether it's an ego thing or not, the guy is just a loser, plain and simple.
Can anyone imagine some self-proclaimed Celtic fan running around and squealing, "There's no way the C's can beat the Lakers! We can't handle the Lakers! We'll lose to the Lakers!" in the 80s??? That's what losers do and we have no place for a pussy like that in the Celtic Nation.
Bill Simmons disgusts me. We finally reach our dream destination in over two decades and he tells us we're gonna lose? To the Lakers? F*ck him! Reverse jinx my ass...He's just scared of getting ass kicked when he comes back to Boston.
Bill Simmons is the biggest douchebag and I'm glad he lives in LA because he and that shallow, plastic city deserve each other.

You people are insane. Where I come from journalists are expected to be objective. If a sportwriter picks against the hometown team it doesn't make them a traitor.
Of course he wasn't even trying to be objective, he was trying do some reverse jinx thing, which is odd but something a typical fan would do.

Your not that familiar with the sports guy are you? He is supposed to be a new kind of writer. He was the BOSTON Sports guy - before changing his name to sports guy and prides himself on NOT being objective. <g> He claims to be a huge BOSTON sports fan and his favorite sport is basketball.
That's why people are upset. Yes a normal national columnist as I pointed out before are supposed to "objective" and that's the normal way of doing things. As I think Shaunesseny (sp?) said - he roots for the STORY he could care less about the team.
Anyone who has written as a sports reporter in any capacity can quickly see why this is.. Anyway that's not a problem because those writers never claim to be fans in the first place. "sports guy" does..
