1st/2nd Round Pick Frustration

For the 1st round, with the 14th pick, I'm either up for (from least to great going left to right): N. Jawai, B. Rush, M. Speights, D. Arthur, or J. Alexander.

-Alexander impresses me the most because of his pure athleticism, hustle, pretty good rebounder, and has a winner's mentality. He should be able to crack into the rotation immediately with those assets. He can turn out to be a tweener at SF/PF, creating a lot of mismatches at the 4. His outside shooting needs to improve though.

For the 2nd round, with the 49th pick, I think we should focus on getting a defensive-minded/bruising PF (e.g., nothing but rebounding, block shots, etc. Either a Paul Milsap, Jason Maxiell, or Brandon Bass-type player). So, players that come into mind in the 2nd round would be J. Dorsey and Devon Hardin. If anything, I'd say we trade some scraps (to trade up) for these 2 players (or call me crazy).

-Joey Dorsey is pretty much like a Ben Wallace. Freakishly athletic, rebounds like a madman, blocks shots, runs the floor well. Too bad he isn't offensively sound.

-Devon Hardin is quite an intimidator and very explosive. has little offensive skills, but still needs a little refinement (e.g., needs to develop a face up game and create his on shots in the post). And he tends fumble the ball often (Adonal Foyle Version 2.0? Lets hope not).

What do you guys think? Other suggested players?

Richard Hendrix is about the same size as Dorsey,is a bit quicker and CAN score..better hands too. I like Dorsey but his limitations will make it hard for him to get minutes. Jason Thompson is my candidate as the steal. He was top 50 in scoring-rebounds (#2) blocks and FG %....after being a solid 20/10 guy the year before. He runs VERY well. He had more assists per than anyone his size. More important-I saw him play and the guy has a broad set of skills without one clear weakness. The only reason to not take him at 14 is that we likely can get him at 20.

Cal's Ryan Anderson matched Kevin Love in rebounds and scoring (more or less) with both playing in the Pac 10. Cost for Love? top 10. For Anderson? #30 should do.

I like Alexander. When a player is improving his game at that pace....that's upside. Athletic? At the Combine he was second only to my homie,Josh Duncan in bench presses...and was faster than all the hyped PG's in the sprint while also being a leaper who's got a real solid J. Work ethic.

Maarty Leuwen of Oregon. Look him up. 6-9 F who was about 45% from 3,had 9 rbd per and had a lot of assists for a PF. Probably will go about where our RD 2 is. Can be kind of our Matt Harpering. Not a star but a plus when in the game.

Jawai can be an okay rd 2 project....IF this franchise really commits to following through. Speights is a bit of a mystery,and he's been a bit inconsistant. Some question his focus/motivation but perhaps he's a budget Amare if we get lucky.....if not.....one way ticket to Bakersfield.

The whole POB affair suggests the Warriors pretty much want draft picks to coach themselves,provide their own new skills,their own prodding. Hey...we only got 4-5 assistant coaches and they have to make runs for burgers and guard Nellie's Scotch,and rent a movie to watch back at the hotel......

A Jason Maxiel clone-and sleeper....Kyle Hines. At 6-6 240.the same size as Maxiel Played at UNC Greensboro.

FOUR YEAR averages...18.2 pt,8.7 rbd,2.9 blocks,1.5 steals,58.4 % FG. Not bad over a full 4 yr run.

Can he play vs GOOD teams? They opened against Ga Tech and he had 25 pt,9 boards and 2 blocks.

Looked up Rush. At 6-6 210 he's smaller than Pietrus. He needed his big tournament game to get his average over 13. In 3 years he averaged almost the same scoring (about 13) and rebounding ( about 5) each year. His FG% and 3 pt % strangely went down a bit every year. Kansas had 7 guys score at least 7.3 per and nobody averaged 14.

Looking at Speight's season I was a bit surprised he had that many 20 pt games. He finished the year with an 18 rbd game in a loss to U Mass.

and even Arthur at 14 with Devon as our 2nd round would satisfy me.

Some thoughts on Nathan Jawai from an Aussie.
I watched the kid about three years ago in a stadium that held about 250 people, he was about 30 kilos overweight, couldn't catch a ball and was out of breath after two trips down the court.

Last year in the NBL, well he was simply a beast. Physically he is a completely different person. He was the standout big man with Chris Anstey but showed more of a NBA skillset for a big guy than Anstey (most would remember him as one of Nellies' great white hopes in Dallas)

His touch is very good with a nice jump shot out to about 16 feet and extremely powerful around the basket. The best part has been his improvement with his hands, catches the passes he should and even some that no big guy should go after.

Now is he a 14th pick in the first round. I would say no.

Is he a near 7footer that has improved immensely, that shows promise for future gains, i have no doubt yes.

I see him as a potentially developing into a very nice backup so if we can get him great but only if it is in the 2nd round.

Of course every team wants to take a chance on an athletic big guy and i guess Yinka Dare was coveted when he came out of college so anything could happen.

One of the things to look at i guess when seeing the positives is that when he is bigger than the defender he trys to go hard (will pick up offensive fouls as a result. Fouled out of a few with offensive fouls and going after blocks last year).

The clips do show his decent outside jumper though.

Joe Alexander's athleticism is exactly why some teams are going to over value him. He's a tweener that should be going in the 20's not the mid to late teens. It would be a big mistake to take him over Speights or Rush at 14.
