Leon Powe Foul Draw Rate

Post#1 » by Rocky5000 » Mon Jun 9, 2008 4:32 am

There was a FT discrepancy in the last game of the finals, but was the source of this the referees or the Celtics players being aggressive.

If you look at Leon's stats, you'll know that he is in the league leaders in FTA/36min. Since he's not the biggest guy(he's probably only 6'6" but is listed at 6'8") he has to use his body to draw contact and avoid getting blocked.

Now I will compare four players you will probably never see compared again....

2007-08 Stats
Kobe Bryant 8.4 FTA/36min.
Leon Powe 8.6 FTA/36min.
Lebron James 9.0 FTA/36min.
Dwayne Wade 9.2 FTA/36min.

That is some pretty nice company for Leon to be in. While he's not quite at the level of Wade or James, he draws fouls more often than Kobe. When you consider the fact that he's only a bench player and therefore doesn't get the superstar treatment, this stat is even more amazing.

So when you look at the FTA from the last game and you see that Leon had 13 FTA, remember that his impact at the line, throughout the season, has been the same as some of the best players in the league.

Congrats. The refs screwed the Lakers. Powe must be as good as the players you named.

No but he plays around the rim. Unlike the Lakers. he is more athletic than most big men so is able to draw contact.

Man the Cs must be so much better at defending Pau Gasol who was aggressive most of the game.

Yes, actually. They did defend Gasol much better than LAL defended Powe. The Lakers played absolutely no defense tonight.

Actually yes. The Celtics have much better defenders. The best defenders in the league in fact, including the Defensive player of the year, who just happens to defend the low post. The Lakers defense is not as good.

Where does Kevin Martin rank? I'm surprised that he's not up there.

Powe's a beast..good player, and seems like a great guy..nice to see ABC talking about a good guy with a good story, instead of some of the bad guys we have to hear about in the NBA..

Powe should not have gone to the line 13 times. Basically, almost anytime Powe got the ball, he was rewarded with FTs. He did get fouled tonight, but at least 2 of the fouls should not of been called.

Most telling is that Lebron, Wade, Kobe handle the ball 10 times more than Powe and shoot more than twice the amount, but Powe draws a same foul rate?

which one didn't Powe deserve? I actually saw him get fouled on his dunk from Rondo's behind the back fake pass with no call..

some people are ridiculous..just because a guy shoots a lot of FT's, it doesn't mean he didn't deserve them..Powe was being aggressive, spread his cheeks and took a **** all over LA's frontcourt..

The point of the thread is that, Powe does INDEED get to the line, it's not a new phenomena.

Powe obviously deserved those free-throws, do you really expect Luke Walton playing at the 4 against Powe to hold his ground?

On a side note, it could be completely different If Bynum were there!

I would just like to take this moment and thank Mr. Stern for creating this situation. What happened to tough physical playoff basketball. These players and fans are just so used to getting these soft calls that when they don't the Refs are biased. The Celtics are a throwback team and it is so great to watch. Some of the fouls being called would not have been called 20 years ago and when they are not being called people complain. This is only going to get worse now that the series is heading back to LA where the Lakers are going to get the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the officials. This is not a good situation for the NBA and will not quiet the conspiracy theorists. We all know that there is know way this is a quick series as that would not be good for the NBA so the situation will reverse it self and that, as I said just gives more fire to the conspiracy theorists !!!
