Note to Doc: Play small ball when you are down, not up

Post#1 » by return2glory » Mon Jun 9, 2008 7:23 am

We were up 16, with 5:56 left in the game. Doc took the hot man out in Powe and went small ball. I'm sorry, you play small ball when you are trailing, not when you have a big lead.

We played the last 6 minutes of the game trying to adjust to what the Lakers were doing, instead of going with what got us the lead.

Doc went small ball with 4 perimeter players in KG, Pierce, Ray, and Posey along with Rondio who isn't much of a scorer. The outcome was we had no offensive flow, got killed on the boards and almost lost the game.

Had it not been for Pierce driving to the basket and getting to the line down of the stretch, we would have lost the game and blown and 23 point 4th quarter lead. Didn't we almost do the same thing vs Detroit and almost losing a 17 point 4th quarter lead? When is Doc going to learn?

I'm glad we are up 2-0 and that Pierce and Perkins seem to be healthy. But we need to make some adjustments in closing out games.

I believe Doc try's to matchup with his foe, honest to me he coaches like a defensive and makes subs like a defensive guy.

I thought he was a offensive coach, but I think there may be more to the mind of Rivers than I first thought.

Ither way Doc still won 2 games of the finals and thats more than most coaches in the league. He has also came a long way from last year and now I would hope we could keep Doc and Tom along with Cliff.

Though if we win the championship I am not sure we will.

I also think the C's run alot of high post offense and that might be the reason pierce did get to the hole.

The Highpost is great when your shooters are knocking down shots but some how a coach looks stupid when they miss and the other team does box out.

That's exactly what Doc does. This is wrong when you have a lead. You don't try to adjust to the team that is losing by 20. You stick the players and type of style that got you the lead.

When you have a big lead, you go into the post more and get either closer looks or get to the line. Two things happen when you do this:
1. Your chances of scoring points increases.
2. It slows down the other team because it makes it harder for them to run after made baskets because it allows your team time to get back and play defense.

We became a jump shooting team and missed a lot of shots and were back peddling on defense. That is why we gave up 41 points in the 4th quarter.
