I would sign Monta Ellis to a maximum contract

Gilbert Arenas is way to unpredictable and somewhat selfish. Monta Ellis is up and coming and plays at a better %. I really do not think that anyone will give Gilbert the money that he opted out of--too risky.

I absolutely LOVE Monta Ellis. People finally recognize his name now, but I still think he's one of the most underrated players out there. You could argue he should have won most improved player 2 years in a row. But no thanks. I know he's smallish, but he's not a point guard, so how would you propose filling the hole there when all we're left with is an aging AD??

Monta Ellis is undersized. The only reason it works is that he plays alongside a very big and strong PG like Baron Davis. Put Ellis alongside a conventional PG and teams would exploit his inability to defend the SG position.

Also, Ellis isn't nearly as good as Arenas offensively. Here are the pace-adjusted per-40 numbers of Ellis last year versus Arenas this year:

Code: Select all

Player        PTS  REB  AST  STL  BLK   TO eFG%  TS%  PER
ellis,monta  19.9  4.9  3.8  1.4  0.4  2.0 .531 .578 18.9
arenas,gilbe 28.1  4.5  5.9  1.9  0.2  3.1 .484 .565 24.1

Ellis puts up very nice numbers at a young age, but it's a HUGE leap of faith to assume that he'll continue to improve his PER from 19 to Arenas' level of 24. Arenas is on another level right now.

Wait, if we've determined on this board that Gilbert isn't worth the max, how the heck is Ellis worth it??? sorry, just read the whole title of the thread...
