Why Celtics Vs Lakers only scored 8% viewing rate?

Post#1 » by Jaykoolzboy » Tue Jun 10, 2008 7:21 pm

Why is this so called biggest rivalry in the history of NBA only hit 8% viewing rate so far? To put in more specific perspective, 2004 Pistons vs Lakers had 10.5 average rating that year and 2002 Nets Vs Lakers had average 10.1 average rating. Not to mention those show time Lakers and Jordan era had average of 12.5 % viewing rate, that is roughly 35% of fan reduction.

What is going on with NBA, if Celtics vs Lakers can't cure the NBA, what can?

9:00pm on the east coast really isn't great for getting viewers. I know where I live most people dont care about the NBA at all anyway and wouldn't watch either way. I've at least noticed more people taking notice of the series than they have in a while.

Because a lot of people hate one of these teams, and the first 2 games were atrocious.

If you want to have a great viewed series THESE DAYS you need two mega superstars on two great teams going at it... Otherwise, you need a player that Transcends the sport beyond anything else... Jordan did that... Kobe is not on that Jordan level in terms of appeal, and never will be... He's never taken the league by storm..

Fantastic player, probably the best in the game, but he's not going to be that torch caring player for the league...It just won't happen.. The general public has a view on Kobe, and no matter what he does, it's probably not going to change..

The Celtics have no appeal in terms of performers... They have all star players, but KG has never been a big draw, and he's the main guy there...

Two great teams, but only one real superstar that is worth watching, but is a superstar that has no potential of being bigger than the game...

No because the NBA can't fix itself with one yesteryear match up. The league has a lot of work to do to clean up its image....which is bad officiating, conspiracy theories and such.

Maybe the start times have something to do with it as well but I honestly thought from game 1 this series would bring at least a 10% share and it hasn't. That has to be very disappointing for the league.

I'm blown away that it can't get a 10% share. I do think start time has a bit to do with it (doesn't the superbowl start at 6:00 pm Eastern time?) but the 7 game series don't help much either, especially when they start flashing the stats after a team gets up 1 game, then 2 games. I don't think those stats will necessarily apply in this series but if the general public is told that it's over 78% (can't recal the exact #) of the time to whoever wins the first game, it makes it hard to tune in to the next game if you believe what the network is telling you.

Because even with ESPN cramming the Celtics down our throat, the vast majority of fans (24-25 and under) don't care about them. They've been irrelevant for two decades and just because they won a bunch of championships in a 8 team league against the lakers, doesn't mean that people today care about it. I haven't seen one game yet, kobe is fake and celtics make me vomit, there's no reason for me to watch the first few games.

Its hard to get older fans to watch a 9pm start that wont end till after midnight. Add the home court bias which has lead to games with no flow and you get good but not great ratings.

Its also just plain harder to get a 10% now then just 5 years ago. Too much competition for something that will eat 12-21 hours of your life.

For someone who hardly watches basketball, you sure do a lot of bitching about it.

I'm watching... but I just haven't liked it as much. Maybe it was all the hype not meeting expectations. Maybe beating old-time Celitcs/Lakers story over and over until it is beyond dead. Kobe MVP hasn't been anywhere close to "as good as Michael Jordan", that he's been built up as. I hate Mark Jackson's announcing. I hate the reffing.

I don't know about other fans.. I've been feeling disappointed and annoyed, after the great WC regular season race with all the hype. And ABC presentation is always bush-league compared to TNT.
