Tyrone Corbin

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Sun Jun 8, 2008 4:14 am

I have been reading up on potential candidates for coaching vacancies around the league and, surprisingly, Ty Corbin's name has come up more than a few times as a likely candidate in CHI, PHX and elsewhere.

I kind of like the thought of him coming home to ATL and maybe taking over for Woody. He has been an assistant coach for Utah the past few years and the Jazz are always one of the most prepared and fundamentally sound teams. (IMO Jerry Sloan is the best PURE basketball coach in the NBA).

With a mentor like Sloan and a history with the franchise, I could almost see Corbin returning and having an effect like Nate McMillan in his short stint with Seattle. I always liked Corbin's defensive intensity as a Hawk and would be interested to see what he brings as a HC.

Obviously he's an unknown commodity, but if he's on the radar of multiple GMs league-wide, it's worth considering.

While I am kind of an anyone > Woodson person, I think it would be best to get a coach with head coaching experience to be a more established voice to our still relatively young team. I'm worried that an assistant in his first head coaching job would run the risk of being tuned out by some of the Hawks if things don't start well on the season. If we can't lure Flip or Avery then I think it will be time to consider Ty Corbin, Tom Thibadeau, and even Mark Jackson as candidates. While they would be first time head coaches I've seen 4 years of the devil I know. Anyone has risk, but their potential upside as coaches seems better to me than Woodson.

3 candidates in my mind as well

Bring in Thibideau, bring in Avery and bring in Flip and I think we have a great core to choose from.

We bring in HC experience from 2 of the better teams in the league and TT would be bringing in someone endorsed as very good by even Kobe Bryant.

We can do worse by standing pat. This is our only opportunity to break clean of the Woody system without financial repurcussions. We rehire Woody, we regret it before the end of the year.

I doubt we hire Avery or Flip, that costs $$$. If we get a new HC you'd think it would be an unproven assistant. If we were going to go down that road, I think Corbin would be a great choice, but you just never know how those types of hires will turn out.

I agree master, and that's why we have to keep Woody. Our owners are not going to spend $$$, and I'd rather at least keep a guy that knows the team instead of taking a shot in the dark.

You might be surprised how much money Woodson will eventually receive from the ASG. I'm sure he's not going to lay over and take a low ball offer!

I'm pretty sure the Hawks are not going to bring in Flip or Avery. The Hawks took forever to bring in a new GM....the fact that the GM took the job and still hasn't hired or interviewed a coach after 2 weeks means Sund already knows who he wants to coach the team. I think Woodson will be the next coach unless he turns down the Hawks offer(which might have only 1 guaranteed year). I believe the rumors that Woodson was a candidate for other jobs is his agent trying to get leverage. I'm still holding out some home that the Hawks aren't as incompetent as we think and are holding out for Thibodeau who the Celtics haven't allowed to talk to other teams during their playoff run. He isn't my 1st choice but I would prefer him to Woody.
