i think it was a sensible move to build up the suspense of a possible rematch between the C's and Lakers. as far as a marketing standpoint goes, numbers are down, people can't relate to these new championship teams like the Spurs because they don't have history or even personable players. If Garnett, Kobe, VC, Iverson, Arenas or a player of that ilk were on those teams throughout their championship run it would do much more for building a legacy that will sell on the open market. otherwise, people don't want to know about the guys who shut up and do the work.

the only thing i think that is mishandled in moments like this is that the NBA will do their best to polarise and entire market to get them to take a side and become more invested in the series. they should be spending more time shining a spotlight on the teams that almost got there and have young, up and coming talent (New Orleans, Magic, Utah, Atlanta etc), as they've already got the draw card of an anticipated finals series, now that the people are in they should sell sell sell!

But people won't "buy buy buy"

This is a damaged product of perception in the eyes of the public. You won't win over non fans with commercials and ballyhoo about the new guys. You'll win people over with dynamic basketball.

It would help immensely if the dumbass league and networks would bring back the Sunday afternoon finals. That is about the only time that borderline fans will actually sit and watch an NBA game.

Many of those memorable finals games in the 1980's took place on Sunday afternoons, when people are attentive.
Basketball is driven by three principles:

1) Movement 2) Application of fundamentals 3) Predictability
