Baron, 14 for Arenas?

Just for discussions sake, what you guys think about this trade idea?


A few things would need to happen for this to work:

1. Washington would have to be reluctant to re-sign Arenas to a huge contract. Therefore making Arenas available to the highest bidding team willing to give him a max extension.

2. Baron would have to not opt out, making him an attractive commodity as an expiring contract and as a player that could fit well on the Wizards next season.

3. Monta would have to be as ready to play PG as many of you people want to believe he is. If the kid is good enough to jump in and run the offense and is able to defer to the teams other scorers like a true PG, then an Ellis/Arenas backcourt would be nearly impossible to stop. If he is not ready then the consequences could be terrible for team chemistry.

Is that team better than the one we had last year? Would we be a "Brandan Wright + 20lbs" away from several years of contention?

I put greater value in a big expiring contract and a low lotto pick with the good track record of Nelson picking players than the scoring potential of Arenas and Monta.

That team would still be a low lotto team. The lotto picks of this and next year hopefully will be the foundation of a contender.

This is not a good idea...

1) You don't ever pay 2 lead guards near max money. Ellis will get close, Arenas will get it.

2) Just because Arenas is a better SG option over Baron doesn't mean its a good situation at all. I'd much rather have DeShawn Stevenson next to Ellis than Arenas. Why? Because he's actually a SG (and he plays defense)

3) Monta's been a PG, pay for Comcast Cable On Demand and see if they can give you any W's game past... say late January. And tell me who's more responsible with the ball... its amazing that Monta was only 2.1 apg behind Baron down the stretch when Baron was so ball-dominant.

Is that team better than last year? Yes. Is it worth it, or even near it? No chance.

And Warriorfan, "good track record" = selective memory. Even if you include Nellie's storied journey to trade Jason Richardson for the man he coveted so hard - Brandan Wright.

The W's need to parlay #14 into more rebounding up front-even if it's somewhat indirectly. Shooter-scorer is not what's absent.

If Arenas is looking at more $ than Baron,that can be a problem. If we are adding much to Baron...also a problem.

In summation - no. We need shooters. The only really good and consistent shooter we have is Al - and as soon as his legs die, usually around February / 3 months into playing our style, we have none.

Now Gil's shooting this past season was brutal, even lower than Baron's eFG. But his usual total hovers around the .450-.460 mark (jump shooting), not bad for a volume shooter like he is.

Point being - the only thing we have in abundance is youthful talent, getting to the rim, and chucking. We're not nearly as well off as a lot of you are assuming we are... but we could be with a change of style and some discipline.

But discipline is for 30 win teams. All the cool teams chuck.

I admit that I had a hidden message in this idea.

Either Monta is ready to be a PG and the addition of the high scoring SG Arenas would bolster the team--OR-- you are uncomfortable with Monta as our PG next to a high scoring SG, since you think it would adversely affect Monta and the SG's game.

Call this a litmus test regarding whether Monta is really ready to be handed the PG reins.

I don't think there is another guard in the league who needs the ball in his hands as much as Gilbert Arenas. Not even Kobe or Wade. It might be interesting to see how Gilbert handles having a scoring big on his team but that wouldn't be us. I don't see Monta as being a lead guard just yet. His ability to comfortably switch from driving to shooting to creating shots for others to floating around without the ball isn't that good. We hope he'll learn to feel out the defense and see what is most effective on each given possession but it isn't there yet. I like the idea of Monta continuing to learn next to Baron and if Baron would come down to earth pay wise after this coming season I think he might stay around for a while. Why not and let him slowly transition out of being the lead guard. Something tells me the drive to win and stay in California would be greater than his desire to be the focal point of an offense. Being the great distributor instead of the great creator is what I believe his future is as his athleticism starts to wane. Why not with us?
