Entertaining Simmons Read

I especially enjoyed the Pierce defense, with the nice dig at the end:
1. Before the 2000-01 season, Pierce was stabbed 11 times at a Boston nightclub, suffered a collapsed lung and nearly bled to death while staggering to the hospital. Less than two weeks later, he played in Boston's first exhibition game. If the same thing had happened to Vince Carter, he would still be on the injured list seven years later.

2. During the 2002-03 season, Pierce got slammed face-first to the floor by Amare Stoudemire, breaking his two front teeth. Thirty minutes later, he was back playing with a mouthpiece. The following day, he underwent emergency dental surgery for seven hours. The day after that, he played against Portland with a mouthpiece and ended up hitting the game-winner.

In my opinion, he's not only one of the toughest Celtics ever, he's one of the toughest Boston athletes ever. Not counting Tankapalooza 2007 (when the team shelved Pierce with a knee injury for half the season even when he probably could have played), Pierce missed just 21 games in nine seasons and played through a variety of injuries and ailments for mostly horrendous teams. So for anyone to insinuate that he is either (A) weak or (B) someone who would milk an injury, is just insane. On top of that, for the Lakers' fans to have the gall to question any other NBA star's character is three times as insane. In retrospect, Pierce's only mistake was not diffusing the Lakers fans before Game 3 by settling with his right knee out of court and buying it a $4 million diamond ring.

That's some decent smack from Simmons. I'm glad he's getting his swagger back.

Simmons has been similiar to Ray Allen.

Sucked babdly at the start of the playoffs, got better and now has hit his stride.

Lets hope ESPN doesn't sit him for the fourth when he is the only writer producing *coughlookingatyouDocRiverscough*

You may be one of the people who are over his writing style and gags but his last several columns should have put any uncertainty about where his aleigances lie to rest.

^^How believable is it after his Laker-lovefest the past few months, though. He only started writing like this AFTER he got blasted by everyone from Van Buren, Maine to Grenwich, CT...

He does make some good points in this one, though...
It's still 17 to 11!!!!

First of all, he conveniently has yet to mention Paul's antics after the Pacers playoff game where he did the post-game press conference with his head wrapped like a mummy. Look, Paul Pierce is a histrionic drama queen. He grew up in LA, rooting for the Lakers and loving Magic, who was notorious for his in-game drama. He used to fall on the floor, writhing in pain like his leg was broken and then be up and running 30 seconds later. Dwayne Wade plays like that too. We all know the kid that would get hurt and roll around on the ground at the local park--that's Pierce. Just accept it.

Secondly, Simmons' pseudo-love for the Lakers is a reverse jinx tactic. He's said as much on his podcasts. He has never convinced anybody in LA that his allegiances lie anywhere but with the Celtics.

I'm not sure how long many of you have been reading Simmons, but he is famous amongst old school fans for being extremely irrational and psychotic when it comes to the Celts. Much more so than his coverage of the Red Sox and Patriots. He has some deep bonds with this team that date back to attending games with his father. Make no mistake, he HATES the Lakers and his judgment of the Celts is always from the perspective of a loony fan ... not a Boston fan. If this team loses to the Lakers it will crush him more than the Pats losing to the Giants and much more than the Yankees beating the Sox in 2003.

^^Yet he picked the Lakers to win it all in MULTIPLE COLUMNS, not just one.

Not buying it.

^^I'm not buying that Simmons hates the Lakers. I know he likes the C's but all that Lakers love all playoffs doesn't just go away, ya know??

So Pierce is going to deliberately miss time in an NBA FINAL to try and look good?

Yeah, that makes sense.

Again, picking someone to win and actually WANTING them to are entirely different beasts.

The Spurs could be playing the Grizzlies, and I could hate the Spurs. Yet I'd also pick the Spurs to win the game, cause the Grizz suck. Doesn't mean I'm a Spurs fan.

Obviously, this is a little more loaded situation, but the same thing applies. There's the rational analyst mind - I think team A is better than team B - and then there's the irrational fan mind - team B is my team and I'll support them no matter what.

Gotta balance that as a writer, even when you're a notorious homer like Simmons. And besides, the Lakers were playing very well coming into this series - I can see why Simmons might have been tempted.

I just think now that the irrational homer is beginning to take over and say "**** objective journalism, the lakers SUCK!"

About time.

Return to Boston Celtics
