Doc Rivers Appreciation Thread

Post#1 » by Gomes3PC » Fri Jun 13, 2008 4:23 am

Man, I don't know how he did it, but Doc Rivers pulled the biggest rabbit out of a hat that I have EVER seen. This thread is dedicated to him, a man who has been much-maligned by this board and Celtics fans in general for his in-game abilities (myself included at times).

Well, this game is the proverbial stick in the spoke of that bicycle. The first half was atrocious, and the Lakers were hitting everything. Even when we had a mini-run, Farmar hits a running 3 at the end of the half to basically squash all fans' hopes.

I don't know what he said at halftime, but it worked. He switched Pierce onto Kobe, and let him get physical. He went small when it was apparent PJ could not run with Odom, and it worked. He picked Eddie House over Sam Cassell, and it worked. He got Ray involved around picks and moved Garnett to the low block, and those both worked.

I honestly have not seen a coach get his players to believe in themselves and the team the way Doc can do. He did it in Orlando with a putrid team, he did it last year with a putrid team, and now with great players he continues to do it. With a league reputation for fickle superstars, Doc has made this trio and supporting cast WORK TOGETHER- UBUNTU. I think this is one of the key differences (along with D, which goes hand-in-hand with teamwork) between LA and Boston. I just get the feeling LA takes the metaphorical '12 cabs for 12 players', and our Celtics are incredibly tightknit- heck, Cassell freaking LIVES with KG! That is a credit to Doc and all the players, who barely knew each other for the most part going into this year and even midway through (PJ and Sam).

Most importantly, Doc got these players to compete with the kind of passion that a champion plays with. I'm not saying we have the rings in the bag, far from it, but that second half performance reminded me of a championship team. That was, without doubt, the best half of basketball this team has played all year, and Doc deserves a great deal of credit for going with a lineup that barely ever played together, if at all (House-RA-Pierce-Posey-KG). They D'ed up, they scored, and they won the turnover and hustle battles.

Doc might not be the Coach of the Year, but he is certainly growing just like this team. Like his players, he started slowly, but has found his way in the Finals, and IMO, other than a few moments (ie- end of Game 3), he has thoroughly outcoached Phil Jackson.

Regardless of what you think of his x's and o's he is hands down the best motivational coach I have ever heard. I LOVE those wired segments. They are genuinely motivational without being hokey. He could write for hollywood.

I only used the term fire doc once this season. And that was when we were having trouble with the hawks. I appologize doc.

He was the coach of the year.

Indeed.

Love his coaching or hate it, the best thing about him and his coaching is his character, which the players rightly believe in.

Maybe he has these unstable rotations because he correctly gambles that, unlike most coaches, he can keep guys motivated even when their minutes are uncertain?

Naah. He really does overdo that, and that it's a negative to be offset against his strengths when evaluating him ...

With Doc Rivers, Terry Francona, and Bill Belichick, the fans of Boston are experiencing a coaching renaissance. Belichick is the king of football Xs and Os (and espionage). Francona is the new Joe Torre- the affable and sharp manager of a high-maintenance juggernaut. And Doc has pulled himself into this pantheon with this 2nd half performance.

Agreed with Doc's motivational talks. He's the kind of guy you see only in a movie, who gets 50 high school kids to run through a wall for him after listening before a game. Matched up with an Xs and Os guru like Tom Thibodeau, and he's the perfect match.

Just an unbelievable props to Ainge, too. Exec of the year is thanks mostly to his player acquisitions, but stealing Tom T was just unreal by Danny. Literally EVERY move this guy made turned to gold (okay, let's forget Sam I Am; PJ was nice though!). Pairing the motivational/offense-minded Doc with the hard-nosed/defense-minded Thibodeau was pure magic.

Sorry for slobbering, but after tonight I think it finally set in how amazing this team has been to watch. You don't full appreciate it until it's almost over I suppose.

Perhaps it isn't Doc, but Red has possessed him???

Pierce DID look straight up in the sky in his on-court interview at the end of the game.........

Doc is a great pro coach. First off, Doc is prepared and he motivates the guys and he gets through to the guys.

Second off, he has a feel for the game because he played and didn't panic.

He lets his players work through it.

Where Doc is weak, and only weak, is his penchant for being stubborn and stayong with guys too long.

Let me say this, Doc is vastly underrated and has destroyed PJ this series.

This team wouldn't be as good with Larry Brown, Paul Westphal, Rick Adelman or JVG as coach. Doc was the right choice to lead this team. I think he has been brilliant this series.

Larry Brown would have put in the bench to make a point and embarrass his starters. Doc turned this team and game around. Brilliant job managing egos and getting the mot out of every player.

And the fact e got this far with such an inept offensive player as rajon rondo proves how good doc is. He puts guys in positions where they can succeed.

House was a terrific move, and another great move was Tony Allen when Posey got his 5th foul in the third. That sparked, like, a 9-0 run to close the quarter. He was smart with his subs in the second half (except for PJ when Perkins went down).

Did anyone hear what the guy in charge of the "Wired" segment said. He listens to all of the talk in every huddle during the season, after the game he went to Mike and said "I've never seen a coach keep a team in the game as well as Doc did, just kept telling them stay calm, keep competeing and everything will be fine."

Doc is the freakin man!!

Doc has shown his true colors. I admit to be entirely wrong about any negative thing I said about Doc in the past. PP was saying he knows the game better then anyone he has played with - and that's amazing.

Doc is an excellent player's coach, the team loves playing for him, and that's given him the ability to motivate them effectively as well.

The issues with Doc have always been personnel based in my opinion, in that he often seems to choose inferior options (like say, Blount/LaFrentz over Al Jefferson, Sam Cassell over House, etc.). When he's forced into playing the right guys (as he basically was tonight), I'm completely confident in his ability to coach the team.

I will give him credit tonight for going with House over Cassell, and I will give him credit for going small/with shooters. Both were excellent moves, and without those moves, the Celtics would not have won tonight. All in all he did a masterful job tonight, in the process making Phil Jackson look completely worthless.

I'm glad he's doing a good job with this team. He has the talent to work with, and he's not messing it up. I'm just glad he's a win away from a championship with this team....
