MIAMI -- The Miami Heat hired David Fizdale as an assistant coach Friday, bringing the 34-year-old back to where he began his NBA career.

Fizdale was an assistant in the Heat video room during the 1997-98 season -- starting in almost the same position that new Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra did 13 years ago. He spent the past five seasons as an assistant with Golden State and Atlanta.

"He has proven to be a great teacher and has helped develop a number of young players in his 10 years of coaching on the professional and collegiate level," Spoelstra said. "Additionally, his belief and familiarity with our culture is an added bonus."

Fizdale has also worked as an assistant coach at Fresno State and the University of San Diego, his alma mater.
Dwight Howard on his FT struggles:

"I just think everybody needs to stop talking about it," Howard said. "There's more to life than free throws."

How do I get a job in the Heat video room? Seems like there is plenty of opportunity for growth there!

I believe I remember seeing this guy wearing some snazzy suits on the Hawks bench. Hopefully he'll bring some of that Mike Woodson ATL style down to SoBe.

Don't know this guy but I wish him well. I really do feel bad for Keith Askins as I thought him moving up would be an automatic. Stan VG wanted to hire Keith for the Magic back when he was hired there, and Riley did not allow it. Seems like Keith would have reason to be very upset/disapointed in his career progress plan given how the Heat is managing it. Hope everything works out for him.

Looks like adding Fizdale is a request from coach Spoelstra. No wonder they work together before.

But my question is, why not put Keith Askins besides Spoelstra instead of Fizdale?

Fizdale is hired as an assistant not as second in command.

Not a big deal. IMO, Foshizzle was brought in to spend more time with the young players like he did while with the Hawks, leaving Askins to work with the other players. I think it is a better situation for Askins.
