Curious minds want to know why the Spurs, picking at the tail end of the first round, are interested in Syracuse forward Donte Greene, a projected mid-first round pick

i dont know why, but ive had the feeling for a while now that the spurs will look to make some kind of moves on draft night. nothing drastic (moving any of the big 3), but i could see them being scared into doing something out of character for this FO and ownership (ie, trying to buy a pick). now im not sure they can get into donte greene range (unless they believe they could buy a pick, package it with their current one, and get into the mid-to-early teens), but they may be able to get up to #20 or #21. i think a lot of talent is going to end up going in the 20-25 range, and unfortunately, we are on the outside looking in.

I think Green would be a very interesting guy, but I always thought of him as a guy who would go into the late lotto. I like him alot, has a silky smooth jumpshot but everything else is lacking in my opinion. I think nowadays having a 3/4 hydrid is now required in today's NBA. We simply don't have a guy like that in our roster. I hope someone slips considering this draft has an unusual amount of bigs compared to normal years.

i have a hard time seeing green slip into the late teens. hes got too much of the hallowed "upside" to last that long.

personally im not a huge fan of his. 50% of his fg attempts were from 3, where he hit at a 34.5% clip. thats not a great clip for the college 3, and thats a ton of 3pt attempts for a guy in the 6'10" range (should be taking the ball inside more against college competition). but hes got a very intriguing skill set, and hes got plenty of room to improve. even though im not a big fan, id be happy to have him on the spurs.

but i cant look at him and not think "jonathan bender". and thats never a good thing...

I think the player that can be best labeled a "Jonathan Bender" is Anthony Randolph. The guy is under 200 lbs and my best bet to be a bust.

Oh yeah... Walker is a gimp

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2008 ... id=3445779
Representatives for Kansas State redshirt freshman Bill Walker were scrambling to secure a commitment from a team drafting late in the first round after Walker injured his right knee during a workout in California this weekend.

Bill Walker

Walker

Multiple sources close to Walker, and at least one who attended the workout in the Bay Area, said Sunday night that Walker would undergo another MRI on his knee Monday. Walker was one of 24 players at the Golden State Warriors' facility to work out in front of representatives from 21 NBA teams. The players in attendance were projected as being between the 20th and 45th picks.

Via Chad Ford...

2. Nicolas Batum, G/F, France*

Batum looked like a lock for the 2007 lottery after last year's scintillating Hoop Summit performance. But inexplicably, Batum decided against entering the draft. And he has fallen under much harsher scrutiny this year.

Batum has the athleticism, size and skill set to thrive in the NBA. But he lacks the assertiveness (or confidence) to live up to his potential right now -- he struggles to create offense for himself. An unimpressive performance at the Reebok Eurocamp this month didn't help his cause.

A lot of teams will look at him closely from No. 15 on down, but who will pull the trigger? As it stands, there's no guarantee Batum goes in the first round; teams later in the draft will worry about getting Batum to come to the NBA on the cheap.

walker scared me as a high risk/high reward kind of player. i think he has the highest home run potential of the wings available, but his attitude and injuries made him a very hard sell. add the fact that he doesnt play defense and the fact that he doesnt have a very good jump shot was enough to put him in my "do not want" pile. you hate to say this kind of thing, but im kinda glad that this happened: hopefully this scares the spurs off of him, and hopefully its not serious and he goes back to school to work on the rest of his game.

btw, did the post layouts and quote style just change on us? looks better.

figured i post this little bit, because its about a couple of the guys i covet from this draft:

http://www.draftexpress.com/blog/Jonathan-Givony/

draftexpress wrote:Brandon Rush also drew some extremely high praise, as his size, length and skill-level were mentioned as big pluses, as was the fact that he can play two positions and looks to be in terrific shape athletically. He played strong defense, shot the ball well from outside, and even showed some nice craftiness with a few hook shots inside. Most executives we spoke with have Rush going either at 15 (Phoenix) or 17 (Toronto) in their personal mock drafts, but there is a chance that a team like Seattle or Cleveland for example could jump up ahead of them and take him at 13th if they can strike a deal with Portland (whose pick is clearly on the block).

so it looks like rush is probably gone even if we could move up into the late-teens. but i figured hes been out of our reach for about a month now.

draftexpress wrote:The reports on Courtney Lee indicated that he looked “good enough to play in the NBA right now,” as he was “explosive, very polished, made good decisions, excellent defensively, jumped right over guys, and was terrific from mid-range.” Lee has reportedly been working out well almost everywhere he’s gone recently, and looks to be making a strong push to be drafted at 22 by the Orlando Magic, who had him in last week for a workout, and sent GM Otis Smith to Golden State to see him again.

i loved this guy going into the tourney. loved him going into the workout process. and i still love him. i think hes the quintessential "spurs guy". now i dont want to get over excited by camp performances, but because i was already high on him going in, and its not like hes coming out of left field for me, but the evaluations of his athleticism has me drooling (was worried he would test out as "middle of the pack"). if orlando is really going to be targeting him at #22, id love for the spurs to explore the cost to get their hands on denvers #20 or new jerseys #21 (which may be on the block), especially if we can hold onto #26 in doing so.

Yeah, I like Courtney Lee for us

S/T'ed Smith/#20 or Diop S/T'ed/#21 for #26/piece (or maybe two pieces for Denver, and maybe no pick for the Nets)) would be nice

even with those flaws, I wouldn't mind Batum..his 2 flaws are easily fixable with the Spurs..confidence and assertiveness isn't an issue on a team with Pop as the coach..he won't have to create his own offense if he's playing with Duncan, Parker and Manu..not a problem IMO..the money could be an issue..

Draftexpress just evaluated the small forwards... I think that is our biggest need coming into the draft.
