Chien Ming Weezy out until at least September[!!!!]

Post#1 » by -steez- » Mon Jun 16, 2008 8:26 pm

IB4TSabbathia I guess? Or maybe Giese or... *sigh* Kennedy? And before anyone mentions Hughes, out of the question seeing as how his ribs still haven't healed apparently so he's busy Pavano'ing it. Anyways, here goes:

NEW YORK -- The Yankees' starting rotation has been dealt a serious blow, as Chien-Ming Wang -- the Major Leagues' winningest pitcher over the last two-plus seasons -- could be lost for the remainder of the 2008 campaign.

The right-hander was examined on Monday in New York and has been diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain of the Lisfranc ligament of the right foot and a partial tear of the peroneal longus tendon of the right foot.

Wang will be on crutches and wear a protective boot for at least six weeks, the Yankees said.

According to that timetable, Wang would not be out of the boot until almost early August, and would require additional time to return his arm to Major League pitching condition.

The evaluations were made on Monday at the New York Presbyterian Hospital Columbia Medical Center, with Wang being examined by Yankees team physician Dr. Stuart Hershon and Dr. Jason Greisberg, a foot and ankle specialist.

Wang's injury is the second Lisfranc-related diagnosis for the Yankees this season, a rarity considering injuries of that type do not normally affect baseball players.

Right-handed reliever Brian Bruney slipped and fell during an April 23 game in Chicago and injured the Lisfranc ligament on his right foot. Like Wang, Bruney was able to avoid surgery and is eyeing a possible return to Major League duty in late July.

It's best to assume he's out for the season and feel fortunate if the Yanks get anything more than that. And I don't think Sabathia's a realistic option. The Indians would be looking for positional help, so the Yanks won't have the pieces in a bidding war; they might not even want him going to an AL team in the first place. So odds are, the solution's going to have to come from within the organization. Don't expect it to be pretty.

I'd be really surprised if the Yanks stand pat and don't make a move for somebody. Not necessarily a stud like Sabathia but someone serviceable like Arroyo. I don't see them simply throwing out rookie after rookie, unless Kennedy does come back very soon and not completely suck.

If he is on crutches for "at least" six weeks, lets be generous and say eight. That means he won't throw until mid-August, he can be back early September if thats the case.

Indeed... If we could get a stud like Sabbathia, awesome but if thats not the case [and it looks like it isn't] then do we take the gamble on a guy like Harden [even if Beane will pretty much ask for our entire system]?

How about Aaron Harang?
* Eats up tons of innings
* Cincy in last place
* Got a big contract (9 mil per)
* In his prime (30 years of age)
* Ace

I read a good point somewhere, which was that Wang's ERA+ is 101, it is very replaceable. Not that it will be easy because he is a 19 game winner the past 2 years, but it shouldn't cause a panic move and giving up the farm for a guy like Sabathia. We should be able to handle this from within (Giese, Kennedy when he gets back, Horne, McCutchen) or go get a lesser talent like Wolfe.

Sorry NYKGM, but you know well that Wang will not have an ERA+ of 101 when this year is done. In addition, he goes deep into games every single time he starts.

He is irreplacable, and we will miss him very much.

To equate him to some scrub like Wolf is laughable...

I think you missed my point. I wasn't equating him to anybody. Wang is an excellent pitcher, he is our ace, but I'm saying that we SHOULD be able to simply get by without him with our young guys or getting a lesser talented starter. Basically, we don't have to replace him with a guy of Sabathia's stature. Wang is very good, but he isn't necessarily irreplaceable.What we will miss more than anything is the innings that he eats up. Pitchers that are irreplaceable are guys like Santana, Halladay, etc. Wang is damn good, and we will suffer without him...but we can get by as long as guys pitch the way they can.

That doesn't mean I am equating him to Wolf, but dropping off from Wang to Wolf for two months doesn't necessarily mean all of our chances go out the window. I think thats fair.

I wouldn't mind giving Giese the next 2 starts [hell. and beyond, he seems to be an innings eater and really, thats all we need]. It's either him or Igawa [:nonono:] seeing as how McCutchen prior to the complete game shut out lost his first 4 decisions in AAA it wouldn't exactly be wise to call him up and Horne as I said earlier just came back from injury so thats out of the question at least until he's 100% in terms of regaining his stuff.

I think they're going to try to get the next few starts from Giese, at least until Kennedy gets back. If they do go get someone from AAA, I honestly don't know who would be first on the list. My choice would be Horne though, hes the most ready and the best pitcher.

Erik Bedard?

And this may be the only time you’ll ever hear a Red Sox fan agree with Hank but he’s right: it’s a ridiculous anachronism in modern baseball to have pitchers hit.

The scouting report on Aceves is that he is a pure pitcher, relying on an array of pitches, good command, and excellent change of speeds. He basically has 5 pitches (4-seam, 2-seam, cutter, curve, change) and his fastball tops out at about 92. This secondary pitches are really solid, but he lives off of his command and change of speeds more than his actual stuff. Like you said in the other thread, he was signed from the Mexican league and has ripped apart the minor leagues so far this season. He isn't very young (25, will be 26 in December) but he has been real impressive. I would be cautiously optomistic about him pitching well in the majors, but I'd be open to him getting a chance...seems pretty intriguing since he was a complete unknown just a few months ago.
