Why not vbulletin?

Ok, so I made this post in one of the threads but didn't want it to get lost in the 25+ pages.....

One word that will solve everything......

vbulletin

Have you guys seen a vbulletin forum? They are pretty cool and very functional. Let me find an example....

vBulletin (Owned License) : 160$ each
vBulletin (Leased License) : 85$ each

The owned vBulletin Forum license allows you to run the software on your site indefinitely. Along with this license, you will receive one year of free updates. Beyond the first year, you will have to pay a nominal fee, currently $30, to obtain updates for an additional year. While The leased vBulletin Forum license allows you to use the software on your site for 1 year and gives you access to products updates for that year. After 1 year, you must renew your license or remove the software from your site.

I thought it was going to be more than this. Why not pay the $160 for an indefinite license? If you really don't want to spend money we could EASILY reach that money with donations from posters. I think it is well worth the investment considering the amount of traffic this site receives. If you really want to expand into large NFL, MLB, NHL boards as well I think vbulletin is almost a necessity. This certainly won't cut it. On top of all that vbulletin is the safest.


So is there reason they decided to go with phpbb instead of vbulletin?

It puzzles me as well. Site that sold software to clubs for $30,000 doesn't have $200 for 2-year+ of fully updated, more secure and generally superior boards?

because they'd lose 10000000000s of posts. There is a reason no big site uses those, because they don't work well unless you're a forum based site.

It doesn't come down to dollars. It's the same as saying "if you can afford a more expensive car, why'd you get _that_ one" or why people run Linux instead of Windows since it is _only_ $100-$300. Why do people buy a house in the suburbs and not downtown for the same accommodation? The answer is that phpBB is good software and does what RealGM needs to.

vB is a software choice like any other. There are converters between vB and phpBB in both directions, so keeping posts or not isn't the answer. It's preference. It's what RealGM is used to, and what performs and has the features RealGM needs/wants.

While some other forum has chosen vB, many others have chosen other things. One is not better than the other. It's entirely opinion.

Hmmm, you probably know a lot more than me about this stuff, but I was doing research and it almost seemed like a consensus that vb was the best one (although I think one was close, not phpBB).
